Westwind Barn, Bryne Preserve to Hidden Villa 7/12/16 by Ronald Horii
I went to check out an open space preserve in Los Altos Hills that I've never been to before, Byrne Preserve, near Hidden Villa: http://www.lahopenspace.com/Hist_byrne.html
I found out about it when I saw this event notice: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/byrne-brigade-habitat-restoration-at-byrne-preserve-registration-26477747656
It's covers 88 acres, but it seems much bigger. It has a network of trails that run through open hills, with views of the Bay and the Santa Cruz Mountains, and deep, shady canyons. It also has a big equestrian complex, the Westwind Barn, where 4H'ers raise horses: http://www.lahopenspace.com/Hist_barn.html. I followed the trails to Hidden Villa, which wasn't open to the public at that time, so I went back. Below are pictures of my exploration, which only covered some of the trails. Here's a map: http://www.lahopenspace.com/Wwind.html
This document about bicycling in the preserve has an even better map (bikes are not allowed in the Byrne Preserve):

I got there by taking Altamount Road, off of Moody Road, west of Foothill College. There are several trail access points off of Altamount Road, but I parked at the Westwind Barn at 27210 Altamont Road.

How many miles did you hike? Are there geocaches in this area?

See GC5DM52. This shows the geocaches in that neighborhood:

Funny, I was just looking at that area because of an old budd-rdc puzzle cache. Could that open space support more caches? Since I am there one a week for 7 months out of the year (to pick up my CSA share), I could place some caches there.
