Calero Ridgetop Hike, 6/21/16 by Ronald Horii
On 6/21/16, after going for a hike to Hidden Lake in Rancho Canada del Oro (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1126136957409825.1073742063.100000405933924&type=1&l=7759f69eec), I decided to go for a hike in Calero County Park, starting from the Casa Loma Road trailhead. I went up the Little Llagas Creek Trail to the Bald Peaks Trail. I came down the Needlegrass Trail to the Longwall Canyon Trail. Here's the trail map: https://www.sccgov.org/sites/parks/parkfinder/Documents/CaleroOSAGuideMap.pdf
It was in the 90's that day, but there was a cool breeze blowing at the start of the hike, so I thought it wouldn't be too bad. Nobody else was on any of the trails I was on. I didn't see anyone on any trail. They were probably scared off by the heat. I thought I was prepared. I wore a hat. I had 3 bottles of water, with an emergency half bottle, with me and finished the 3 full bottles. I was hoping that was enough. I frequently stopped in whatever little shade I could find on the trails. There was a breeze blowing, but the trees often acted as windbreaks, cutting down the cooling air. I hiked about 4 miles with about a 700 foot elevation change. I was going to hike farther into Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve, but the heat and my sore ankle made me take a shorter route. Here are pictures of the route. — at Calero Reservoir County Park. (near Calero Reservoir County Park)
