Saratoga Quarry Park, 2/29/16 by Ronald Horii
I heard about a new park in Saratoga. It's called Saratoga Quarry Park. It was originally a private rock quarry, starting in the 1850's. In 1921, Santa Clara County purchased the property and used the quarried rocks and gravel to build the county's roads. It closed the quarry in 1967, but retained the property. It was used by county road employees as a recreational facility. They built picnic and BBQ areas, but it was not open to the public. In 2011, the City of Saratoga acquired the property, with assistance from the Mid-Peninsula Regional Open Space District and the Santa Clara County Parks. It opened to the public as a city park on Halloween 2015. The property covers 64 acres, which is huge for a city park, though only the lower part is open. Future plans call for opening up more trails higher up in the park and connecting to other regional trails, including the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail. Below are pictures of what the park looks like today.

Must be a challenge to make and keep a quarry safe for kids and families.

Cool! I need to check out this place. I see that there are already three geocaches there.

The old mining ruins remind me of Almaden Quicksilver. The terrain and stoneworks remind me of Sanborn and Villa Montalvo.
