Rio Olympics - Day 10 by Robert Hanashiro
A day at the pool: First for the synchronized swimming duet preliminaries and then later that evening for the men’s 3M springboard preliminary round. It was a long day with the synchro swimming under a blazing mid-day sun and then very cool, windy conditions for the springboard competition.

Camera/lens for synchro: Nikon D500 w/ the Nikkor 70-300mm zoom; Camera/lens for diving: Nikon D5 w/ the Nikkor 200-500mm zoom.

I have been experimenting with Nikon's auto-AF feature and have to admit that with certain events, under certain conditions it is extremely accurate. For the diving it was literally 100%!

It had been years since I covered Olympic diving, I think all the way back to the Barcelona Summer Games in 1992. But I remember my USA TODAY colleague Porter Binks giving me a bit of advice, suggesting that handholding the camera/long lens would be easier to track the speeding divers. I ended us shooting the D5/200-500mm in the first round with the monopod and handheld the remaining 5 rounds.

As always, thanks to Robert Deutsch and Jack Gruber for keeping me sane here in Rio. And special thanks to Mark Suban and the Nikon Professional Services crew for their help and support.

And thanks for looking!
