Rio Olympics - Day 9 by Robert Hanashiro
Just like (don't-call-it-ping-pong) table tennis, Olympic level badminton is not your backyard sport. It's athletic, takes power and is incredibly fast. To try to capture all of that, it may sound silly, is very , very challenging.
It's takes reflexes, fast hands on the zoom ring on your lens and the Auto-AF feature on the Nikon D5!
I spent 16 hours in Rio Centro Pavillion 4 covering badminton, and like my say covering table tennis, I have a huge respect for the sport and for the athletes that compete in it!
Thanks as always to my USA TODAY colleagues Robert Deutsch and Jack Gruber for helping to keep me sane. And thanks to Nikon Professional Services and especially Mark Suban for their support and friendship!
(Yes the Nikkor 200-500mm zoom on the Nikon D500 rocks!)
