Rio Olympics - Day 8 by Robert Hanashiro
In addition to a lot of muscle, emotions were on display during the Olympic Men's 94kg weightlifting competition.
Covering an event like weightlifting, having the versatility of a long zoom lens really helps. The ability to go in tight to capture the face of a lifter as he strains to lift 500 pounds and then pull back as he drops the bar and celebrates is key.
It was incredible to watch these athletes lift that much weight and then have the emotional reaction that these images show. It was very cool to see Iran's Sohrab Morad start to walk off the platform after winning the gold medal, turn around and kiss the weights.
While many photographers looked forward to the "big event" of the day --- track & field --- spending several hours covering the 94kg men's weightlifting competition proved to be quite an experience.
Camera: Nikon D5; Lens: Nikkor 200-500mm zoom.
Thanks as always to my colleagues and good friends Robert Deutsch and Jack Gruber for keeping me sane.
And a big shoutout to Nikon Professional Services for their support of not only our coverage of the Rio Summer Olympics but also for helping me put on THE coolest sports photography event of the year: Sports Shooter Academy 13. (Thanks Mark Suban and his NPS crew!)

A long time ago I use to work out with a bunch of Olympic weight lifter hopeful. Strong, yes, fun group to share a gum with, you bet. One day someone dropped his weights from above his head on to the padded floor and it busted through the pads and broke through a 6 inch concrete floor.
