Behind The Curtain @ The 87th Academy Awards by Robert Hanashiro
Lots of changes backstage at the Dolby Theatre for the annual Academy Awards show.

Even more crowded. For the first time a handheld camera. No lights in the hallway outside of the stage ... but lighting in the wings beyond the curtain!

Even with the added lighting, it was a very difficult shoot. Dealing with backlight and lens flare was a concern. But the biggest challenge was just getting a shot with so many photogs and people crowding around.

Also as I was shooting J.K. Simmons, the first award of the night for best supporting actor, I had my main camera stop working.
(Along with my heart for a few minutes!)

But I did make a couple of frames ...

As with the awards show a few thank yous:
- USA TODAY Life picture editor Jym Wilson for his tight editing, finding the diamonds in the rough in and his encouragements.
- My Rabbi Robert Deutsch for his patience and ear.
- Nikon Professional Services --- especially Sara Moosbrugger Wood, Mark Suban and Ronal Taniwaki.
- Dan MacMedan for being there always when needed.
- My Oscar Backstage Colleagues: Matt Sayles and Al Seib for their guidance and friendship.
- And of course Emma and Deanna.

As always, thanks for looking!

Tech Note: Cameras - Nikon D4 and D4S; Lenses: Nikkor 24-70mm, Nikkor 70-200mm and Nikkor 50mm f/1.4; Exposure: ISO 3200 - 8000.

So the question is... Why did your main camera stop working?

Not sure why. Removed battery. Removed lens. Started working again after a while. I had another D4S messengered to me backstage and I we also got another backup from NPS.
