The Katsura Tree, merkitsijänä George School
One of the most beautiful trees on campus, the Katsura Tree on South Lawn, was taken down yesterday in deference to its frail and dangerous condition. Many of you might know that this tree was the model for the George School “tree in full-leaf” logo that was created in the 1990s by Rutka-Weadock Design to replace the “tree in winter” logo of the 1970s that some people called the "broccoli logo." We invite you to share your photos and memories of this beloved symbol of George School on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Oh no! That's so sad. This tree was so symbolic of our time spent there together and brought back amazing memories...

Oh no! I sat and read many a book under that tree. A few friends climbed its leafy branches. The campus is going to look naked without it. Can you plant another Katsura tree in its place? Keep the tradition of the tree alive, maybe?

My sophomore and junior year view of south lawn were that much better thanks to this tree

When I would tell people where I went to high school, they would always say "the one with the tree?". This tree will be sorely missed. Hope they replace it with another.

I believe some of the wood was saved for use by Carter and the students. Plans are being discussed for the planting of a new Katsura tree.

Sad news indeed. Looking forward to seeing photos of a new tree (or 3?) and watching it grow over the years.

It was the kind of tree you didn't just notice; you experienced. Happily, many naps were had in its shade.

I called this my 'fantasy' tree. For years, students in my Fantasy class would write original fantasies and on lovely spring days we'd all gather under the tree and each person would read aloud their story! Some were so creative, just wonderful! I loved this special time of sharing....

Gazing at this tree in all seasons often helped me find an inner peace when times were tough. I will miss it.

Losing that beautiful tree is like losing an old friend... Remembering great times and feeling sad that it's time has passed.

We saw the extensive damage to this tree, when visiting campus last week. It was always so beautiful to see the changes through the seasons as our family walked up to campus from farmhouse. What damage this winter has done to our favorite trees!!!!

Heard the rumor and had to drive by to see for myself yesterday. So saddened to see it gone! Cruel, cruel winter!
