"Come and Hear from your Member of Parliament" by ACDP
Over the weekend, ACDP MP Cheryllyn Dudley visited the Bluff area in Durban to hold various meetings, to give feedback on her work in Parliament. These photo's are from a Saturday afternoon intimate meeting with long standing branch members from the Bluff. Cheryllyn has been an ACDP representative in the National Assembly for going on 15 years now and is presently serving on the International Relations, Health and Basic Education Portfolio Committees. When she first got involved in Politics, she lived on the Bluff and started ACDP branches there. She shared about aspects of her work and her perspective on issues facing South Africans today. She also made herself available to respond to questions! She spoke about how it was a privilege to represent those whose votes had put her in Parliament, as well as through all the really difficult challenges, when she looks back, she is even grateful for the tough times and what they taught her. She also shared some of the highlights. She also spoke about the reality behind the poilitics, and how very different thing are to how the media portray how things work in Parliament. The reality is that to be useful in committees you need to know what's going on broadly. She shared on how over the years she has been on many different committees and learnt a great many things whilst on them. She said that she would love to see many more ACDP members of Parliament to complement the work the current ACDP MP's are doing, and also to have the opportunity to mentor, so that new members don't make the same mistakes. She spoke about the things she has learnt the hard way in Politics, and about how the party has grown, and become more open to all points of view, and was poised for growth. She said the most difficult thing, is sometimes choosing what you cannot do, what you can't take on. She called on ACDP members to mobilize communities to help get the job done. She also spoke about knowing when to compromise, and being able to share with colleagues in committees about being more inclusive and consider both sides. She said unless you visit both sides and ask for answers, you will not get them. She was speaking with particular reference to the Middle East. She also spoke about the 'denialism' era under Mbeki, and how it has set us back, especially in Education. She spoke strongly about how in Politics, opposition at the cost of progress is not how the ACDP operates. As a party we will always look at the value where there is value and oppose where it is neccessary. We are not like other opposition parties that oppose for the sake of sensasionalist headlines. We want to see progress and move forward towards a shared future for all South Africans. After broaching a broad range of topics she encouraged members to be active and find out what is going on and keep informed. — at African Peninsula Restaurant. (near African Peninsula Restaurant)

It was wonderful to see Sarah Downs, her brother and PK at the Bluff meeting on saturday. The three were a wonderful example of the calibre of Youth we have in the ACDP. Malema would do well to take a leaf out of their books!
