To the consternation of my neighbors when I lived on a lake in Olympia, WA, we used to buy bags of dog food at Costco and we fed the raccoons every night. HEEEEERE, KITTY KITTY!

I LOVE raccoons. I wish I could see this tonight. I've known three people who've kept them as pets. One guy used to downhill ski with his big raccoon on his shoulder. Another raccoon would ride around on the back of a big, black Lab. They are so smart. It doesn't surprise me that they are rising to the urban challenge.

We ARE in Their space, so it is incukmbent upon us to treat them humanely, no matter what they do that distresses us. Us, ahem, being the 'superior' species.

When I lived in Alameda, CA 20 years ago a family of raccoons lived in the attic of the house where we rented an apartment. They came out during the day. They had four babies in the wall of our upstairs neighbor's kitchen, who cut a hole to get them out. I fed them milk from a syringe for two days. Channel 4 New came and did a story about them. We tried to trap the mother for two days and couldn't. The babies were taken to the Lindsey Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek. In the Oakland, CA neighborhood where I live raccoons walk around, climb into storm drains, get into garbage dumpsters. I have seen them at dusk and the middle of the night. I have never been afraid of them but I would never feed them. They are wild animals. We have just as many skunks and opposums all around as we do raccoons. Wild turkeys too.

I think one of the duties of humanity - even if by unintentional consequence is to educate nature - coons, crows and many others are very eager students.Another of our duties is to propagate Life throughout the solar system and beyond.

We have a raccoon family that lives in a big fir tree across the street that gave birth last Spring, the kits are so adorable. I used to see the mama scurrying in the street with them in search of food at dusk. I want to see this show, love raccoons. ♥

We had raccoons in my former neighborhood in Brentwood, MO; right in the middle of St. Louis County. I'll never forget the time in late afternoon, a raccoon came walking down the sidewalk, looking rather old & feeble, and actually crossed at the end of the block in the crosswalk! All the neighbors were out working in their front lawn, so I didn't have to explain it! This was definitely a "civilized" raccoon.........

They are training us. You better believe it.

Kids had a "pet" racoon,lots of fun!

I have come face to face with several Racoons, and they were big and not afraid. One of them hissed at me, my dogs went crazy. I was scared the racoon would hurt my chihuahuas....

just saw one tonight running down my sidewalk in cleveland hts, ohio

i was gonna watch George Clooney...but the racooons are more interesting!

Raccoons have been "killing" (by attacking and eating the vent of our laying hens) for several months now. Was able to purchase Duke DP Coon Traps (DP stands for dog proof) and have caught six large coons in 11 days. Coons are nasty predators and carry diseases as well as rabies. They can and will bite you. I had rather have laying hens any day than a raccoon.

This is who owns our urban centers when the sun goes down.
