klub katarakt is a festival for experimental music in Hamburg which deals especially with space and sound as part of the musical conception. Another important aspect is audio-visual art.
In the past ten years the festival presented guest artists such as Phill Niblock, Alvin Lucier, Charles Curtis (presenting La Monte Young's and Marian Zazeela's work), Rhys Chatham, Eliane Radigue, Gerard Pape, Marc Sabat, Matthias Kaul, Makino Takashi, Lois V Vierk, Marko Ciciliani, Telcosystems, and in 2016 Christian Wolff, Sascha Lino Lemke and Rainer Kohlberger.
Beyond a physical meaning of space in the sense of positioning of sounds klub katarakt is also concerned with other sorts of spaces and their exploration: for example the space between or beyond the conventional western pitch classes or the spaces of styles and esthetics seemingly contrary to ‘classical’ New Music.
The festival presents works and musical positions which are rarely or never heard in Hamburg.
