About Kindness Counts
Kindness Counts is a not-for-profit organization that uses creative and unconventional approaches to inspire “active kindness”. We believe that kindness is not a passive concept – not being mean is not the same as being kind. Kindness is active – it’s going out and doing good deeds, it’s making people smile, it’s making people’s days. It’s reminding ourselves that we are in control of more than just our own lives – we can change each others’ with just a little bit of kindness.

We try to motivate that “active kindness” by changing the way people think about kindness, by making kindness cool. So how do we do that?

We have three broad categories of initiatives: Social Media, University and School Programs, and Retail Partnerships.

On social media, we try to make kindness “viral” and reach as many people as possible. Most notably, our #FeedtheDeed initiative (link to the #FeedtheDeed page) has inspired thousands of acts of kindness through people posting videos of themselves performing random acts of kindness to Facebook and then nominating their friends to keep the chain going.

In universities and schools, we run student-led programs that spread kindness across university campuses, high schools, and elementary schools. By building leadership and teamwork skills among students, we aim kindness cool through fun, unconventional, and high-impact initiatives.

And finally, our retail partnerships program. This one is just getting started, but we couldn’t be more excited about it. In this stream, we partner with retail outlets on simple yet unconventional programs and products that creatively spread kindness in their communities.

We are inspired to become a global brand for “good”. We aspire to unite people under the simple message that we think lies somewhere in every person; that may be buried deep and only remembered when giving or receiving a good deed – kindness counts.

Finally, you can’t truly understand Kindness Counts without understanding the inspiration behind it:

Speaking to a crowd over 2,000 people, Elie Weisel, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and Holocaust survivor, said that the biggest problem with the world today is that there is too much creativity for evil and not enough creativity for “good”. In the battle of good vs. evil, he feared that evil may be on pace to prevail. The solution, he argued, was more creative and productive thinkers for "good"; thinkers that acted on new ideas to make the world a better place.

Inspired by Weisel, Russell Citron founded Kindness Counts to be a creative force for “good”. The name was inspired by the Russell’s late uncle, Dr. Ken Citron – Kindness Counts keeps Ken’s initials in its name, along with the kindness that was so contagious throughout his life.

And with the help of so many people, Kindness Counts has grown rapidly and spread kindness across the globe. With your help, Kindness Counts can take its place in strengthening the force for “good” in the historic battle of good vs. evil. We encourage you to spread active kindness and remember the simple message that we believe can change the world – kindness counts.
