Today, my thoughts are with my fellow Marines deployed to defend our embassies abroad in these perilous times. The Administration owes them - and the American public - a plan.
There is no question that Qassem Soleimani was an enemy of America, responsible for countless deaths and horrific destruction. But as we have learned from the last 20 years in the Middle East, this kind of provocative and extreme action must not be taken unless we are fully prepared for the consequences. As of yet, there has been no statement to Congress by the Administration regarding any plan or strategy.
The President's "maximum pressure" campaign and unraveling of the Iran Nuclear Deal have already resulted in extreme consequences. While the strategy was designed to subdue Iran into submission, it has instead emboldened them, placing us on a needless collision course with Tehran.
After yesterday's strike, we are now faced with Iran's vow of "harsh retaliation" and the possibility of a regional war. Our troops and the American people deserve an explanation. It is imperative that Congress hold the Trump Administration responsible for an account of its calculations, the steps it has taken to protect Americans around the world, and what comes next.
This is why it is critically important that we repeal and replace the 2001 #AUMF, have a real conversation about war powers, re-evaluate priorities in the #NDAA, and most importantly - elect leaders who understand the very real costs of war.
Last night felt like all the holiday celebrations 2020 robbed us of rolled into one...Pride, the 4th of July, weddings, birthdays, and so much more. We danced, we sang, we cried.
Today, we nurse our hangovers (and yes, GET BRUNCH 💁🏼♂️) and tomorrow....we get right back into the fight!
If the last four years taught us anything, it’s that democracy is a contact sport. So suit up and get ready to rumble!!!
In the battle for the soul of our nation, our voices matter.
Since April, California Veterans for Biden volunteers have been calling into Maricopa County, AZ - a key county in the fight to turn AZ blue.
It matters. Your voice matters.
From first-time volunteers to veteran campaigners, General Officers to junior enlisted veterans, YOU made this happen - by volunteering your time, recruiting your friends, and doing the work.
THANK YOU for showing up, making your voice heard, and taking action to make sure that the values we share are reflected in our highest leadership. By sharing your experiences, values, and time with voters, you’ve made a real impact on this election. No election has ever made it clearer - EVERY. VOTE. MATTERS.
Celebrate this moment. We deserve it. But I have an ask of you: Stick around.
We’ve still got a winnable fight for two Senate seats in GA. At the local level, here in San Diego, Democrats have swept every level of government - from the Mayor’s office and a super-majority on the City Council all the way to Capitol Hill. But that doesn’t mean we can tune out. Elected leaders need us - to build support for progressive policy, grow the pie of involved citizens, and hold elected officials accountable.
So please - stick around, stay involved, and continue to use your voice. I’ll be in the trenches with you.
Today’s the day and we are up early dropping last minute lit for local candidates! If you want to channel your anxious energy into something productive, please join me later today for a swing state phone bank to TURN OUT THE VOTE from 10:30-12 PM PST or 2-3:30 PST. Democracy is a contact sport!! https://www.mobilize.us/joebiden/event/283940/ and link in bio. #vote2020 #vote #voteblue2020 #veterans #veteransforbiden #vets4biden #lgbtq🌈 #lgbtqvote
