I don't know at what point participation trophies stop making sense, but as the dad of a sports-obsessed 6-year-old that *loves* getting a trophy or medal or whatever after a joy- and competition-filled season, I'm all for them.
PS: Bryce Harper is a god, but given that he was a child baseball prodigy who isn't yet a parent, I don't really wanna hear from him on the subject.

I agree with you. We got them for all the kids after James' first soccer season and the whole idea was just to get them excited about playing & feel good about themselves. I don't see the harm in that.

They get kids to come back next season....and are particularly helpful in motivating those with lesser natural talent....some of them go on and thrive

Participation trophies or "you showed up trophies" give a false sense of accomplishment and instill the expectation of getting a reward for everything and anything. This creates students who expect to pass just because they showed up for class and so on. Would you give your kid a trophy every time he does something you asked him / her to do?

Not a big fan of these after 6 or 7 years old... there should be some recognition of those who practice really hard and play their butts off to win. How is it fair to those kids that everyone gets same trophy?
Wouldn't that also drive others to work that much harder?

After the brawl today...hard to make sense of a purposeful mean pitch followed by anger. Hmmm who should get a trophy? Recognition is one thing. Getting a prize for showing up makes some feel entitled.

I don't like them either but I'd say 8 is a good cut off... only bc that was when my daughter literally said, 'It's nice but not really special bc everyone gets one'! 😂

There's no debate in current American discourse that ultimately means less than this one. It drives me absolutely nuts. Parents should do what makes sense for their kids and their leagues. Most of the trophies are forgotten in a week or two (if that). But to politicize it and suggest this practice has a large bearing on the direction of the country is absolutely insane.

At the risk of this going off the rails, I'm curious what you and others think about the same concept regarding educational awards?

I think to s certain stage it's fine. If they are too young to comprehend winning and losing (like, championships) then the ribbon or trophy deal is fine. But there is a point that needs to be cut out so they understand those concepts of winning, losing and sportsmanship
