Honest Elections Seattle is a campaign with a simple goal – to encourage a more diverse pool of candidates for elected office and ensure everyone has the opportunity to have his or her voice heard, not just the wealthy and political elite.
A coalition of citizens and community organizations are working together to ensure honest, accountable, and transparent elections in the city of Seattle. The Honest Elections Seattle Initiative is a reform proposal to give voters real control of the election process and get big money out of politics in Seattle. This is critical right now because rulings like Citizens United have damaged our democracy, allowing unlimited corporate money into campaigns and restricting the chances that new voices can run for office. New lobbying, disclosure, and enforcement measures in this initiative give a real voice to regular people and hold elected leaders accountable to us, the voters. The initiative also includes an innovative public financing system for all city offices – including mayor, city attorney, and at-large and district city council persons to get big money out of politics.
