Make Woodmill a Safer Route

Too many incidents have happened on this section of Woodmill Lane; most recently a Nissan Micra crashed into the mill building causing serious damage and closing the road for an indefinite period (1). Previous major incidents have included the injury of a 64-year-old man, who was struck by a van as....

We call for Southampton City Council to prioritise the safety of vulnerable road users, especially children, over the convenience of drivers by making Woodmill a Safer Route for pedestrians andMore cyclists. We ask that the bottleneck be closed to through-traffic creating a traffic-free crossing of the River Itchen that children can use to safely journey to school and play in the park.

We envision a safe route for walkers, runners and cyclists and those working at, and enjoying, Woodmill Activity Centre and The SUP Company. This would allow social distancing during the pandemic and cease the danger to pedestrians who have to step into the road to pass each other. Emergency vehicles should continue to be able to use the route and would benefit from the uncongested route.

Cllrs are saying #GetSouthamptonMoving so we need to point out eg - many residents do not have access to a private vehicle so need safe (restricted vehicles) and faster (eg bus lanes letting buses get ahead of queues) options. More ideas in the Southampton Street Space open letter below.

An open letter from Southampton Street Space to the new leader of Southampton City Council.

Dear Mr Fitzhenry.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the recently elected councillors for their success in the recent local elections. As your new administration is welcomed into office we look forward to hearing your plans to helpMore encourage active travel in our wonderful compact city. In particular we look forward to seeing you working towards safer residential neighborhoods and encouraging more school streets, as you called for when in opposition, so we expect to see all existing schemes retained and expanded.

We also hope that you take on board the aspirations of the Prime… More

🗳 What an amazing result for Green Parties across the UK at the elections last week!

💚 In England, a total of 155 wins were secured which included 99 gains, many of which were with big swings!

🇷🇴 Gains were made from the Conservatives (45), Labour (49), Liberal Democrats (4) and Independents (2)

There is no no-go area for the Greens and we certainly do not take seats from just one party, nor just the left!

There is a survey which so far goes against Tory thinking.

I agree had the deposit been considerably smaller we could have budgeted for some promotional expenses and the deposit for a Green Party candidate. https://www.hampshirelive.news/news/hampshire-news/party-wont-stand-hampshire-pcc-5354829?fbclid=IwAR0UZAMVhoov5qPyNSm6rCNreoKJHitkReyWn39bQhLPAuy0RXy0-yv-vcM

Tell the government to stop dumping our plastic waste abroad.

The government is dumping our plastic waste abroad causing a health and wildlife emergency. Tell them to stop.
Southampton Greenpeace, profile picture

Less than 10% of the UK’s household plastic packaging is actually recycled in the UK. Instead, plastic the government claims is recycled is being exported to other countries, where most of it is at high risk ofMore being dumped and burned in the open air. This is recycling that many people (maybe even you!) have spent lots of time sorting properly for collection.

This waste isn’t just harming oceans and wildlife though, it’s harming people too. Communities in Malaysia and Indonesia (and more) who live near where plastic is dumped and burned are reporting serious health problems, like respiratory issues, nosebleeds and headaches. This is sickening and unacceptable. But with enough support we can stop this - please sign.

🗳 With just 10 days to go until the #LocalElections2021 we are on countdown and introducing you to your local candidates!

🏘 Helen Makrakis is our candidate for Sholing and she has lived and worked inMore Southampton for forty seven years. Helen has been involved with the community through work as School Governor and Chair of the local Community Action Forum. She started a Resident’s Association and become the Chair of the Forum of Residents’ Associations.

🌇 Helen was elected as a Southampton City Councillor 25 years ago and became Spokesperson for the Environment. It was during this time that she helped to start the Councils’ 24 hour noise and nuisance call out service, amongst other things. Helen’s priority is to help facilitate a linked-up plan for the progression of our city, as presently it lacks direction and co-ordination.
