This bill destroyed my income. At the New Year, I had two major out-of-state clients. I was writing anywhere from 4-8 articles a day between them (fully remote). I lost my first client on January 8 and the second one yesterday. Both clients expressed how much they regretted having to suspend my contracts because they highly valued my work. One said they will be actively trying to find a solution. However, this leaves me with only one client left. My third client is one I’ve had for almost three years. Out of loyalty, they are keeping me on but had to cut me down to three articles a month instead of three a week to comply with the 35 pieces of content rule. That currently makes my monthly income $150, while I desperately try to figure this out.

So sorry. I have also lost writing work because clients are afraid of running afoul of the confusing bill and just won't work w California-based freelancers at all. For one I was not even given the option of reaching 35 in this beginning of the year. Hope things turn around for you soon!

OK someone smart on here suggested that you create large packages of which 10 or 20 articles are 1 item. Therefore, if you were writing 50 articles, that is the "package" I dont know the law well enough but just trying to help

Where are you located? Id like you to call Ben Huesos office. Todays receptionist seemed to have all the answers for every situation. You may not be in Ben Huesos district..but you could explain your call as hearing his office ' had details" or whatever. Please call. Let us know who says what....Senator Ben Hueso.. .619- 409-7690.

Is there a way to get state or federal funding for AB5 Disaster Relief? This bill killed us, and we aren't able to recover our lives fast enough. Any ideas?

I worry that the days of freelancing for the sort of sites that have you writing 4-8 posts a DAY may be over. Survivors will be doing fewer, more sophisticated, more highly paid pieces, I think.

What if you pass the ABC test? Then aren't you exempt from having to write under 35 pieces? I thought if you passed the ABC test you are considered an independent contractor and can proceed as usual? Am I wrong?

I'm confused. Why don't you create an LLC? That would allow you to keep the clients and prove that you're an independent company? Asking truly because I don't know why this isn't an option for you I hope you find a solution.

Sarah, your story is precisely a summation of what Ab5 has done to freelance writers and other freelancers. This law takes away work and income/revenue. There is nothing positive of losing clients and projects and contracts. When it comes to every other business, it is easy to see how loss of projects and revenues can devastate business but somehow when it comes to freelancers, we are somehow not suffering despite loss of work, we arent struggling despite losing money. Somehow our problems dont matter. This is what angers me and infuriates me about the climate about Ab5. Somehow we dont count because we are freelancers.

Okay, so if you can do up to 35pcs can’t you just do “1 piece” per month?

Have that one piece be the whole months content?

This is terrible. Sorry this is happening.

Btw. Can we change the definition of what constitutes a piece?

Little Women was one book, broken up into sections for the paper it first appeared for. Yes?

Could writers be hired for one “piece,” published in sections?

I am definitely sorry to hear of all the people that lost their income out of what seems like fear and misunderstanding and also the people who don't qualify as IC anymore. I was just about to start an online copywriting business and now obviously very concerned. I just think there still has to be a way around it. Going to call a labor attorney and get more clarification. Too easy to misunderstand these things.

It's screwing almost everyone who's in any way a Independent contractor. (Except for the people who wrote the stupid bill of course) 😡

One of the saddest parts is that California businesses can hire freelancers out of state but not in state.

Something you can do is support the candidates that are running against the politicians that voted for AB5. Vote in the people that want to repeal AB5. THAT is how this works. Candidates especially need volunteers to write copy for them and get articles written to promote them. Use your skills to help get the people in office who will support you. I'm not understanding how this affects hiring companies from other states, especially if the contract is in their jurisdiction. Does anyone know how this works?

and just WHO is going to hire this person as an employee? I am sure that Sarah Wolstoncroft is a very good writer or she wouldn't have such loyal clients but as a full-time employee? That just isn't the way this business works!

I am just plain flabbergasted that lawmakers think this bill is viable in the freelance work environment!
