Despite providing contracts between myself and my IC's, plus independent… Mehr interviews, proving they meet the requirements of being classified as an IC, the EDD's preliminary findings say I owe thousands of dollars in back taxes because "Explanation �1127 Assessment Penalty: Due to negligence or intentional disregard of filing the incorrect amounts of employer or worker contributions." I understand having LOW interaction. But literally not one interaction of any kind whatsoever outside of my own? I'm fascinated/pissappointed/pissgusted.

Be an employee and be in the Union if you want. It is supposed to be your choice. Freelancers and independent contractors CHOOSE NOT to be employees for our own reasons. And many are ALSO in a union, sometimes multiple unions and find that there is still important work to do as freelancers, independent contractors and small businesses that utilize the skills of the aforementioned.

I have suspicious feelings about this city ordinance that purports to protect freelancers. It’s still the government getting between freelancers and their clients and puts a target on small business. It could… Mehr also be a trap that leads straight to the labor commissioner or an EDD audit. Anything that results in litigation, fines and audits could be construed as detrimental in the long run and overreach by the government. Plus, the shady “Freelancers Union” supports it. Thoughts?

My wife just left LAUSD and man, it’s looking pretty grim finding plans for our family/kids through CCA. Wondering if there are any options for musicians that people have found. The EDD offers free webinars about AB5 straight from the horse’s (aka enforcer’s) mouth. I watched one of these seminars last year and found it to be very informative. They will attempt to field all questions… Mehr and are generous with their time. You can even stump them with a question that is impossible for them to answer due to the convoluted nature of AB5.
