Pussy Riot rEvolution
In February 2012, 5 members of the feminist punk rock group Pussy Riot staged a performance in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior, protesting the church's support for vladimir putin… More during his election. The collective, donning brightly colored miniskirts and balaclavas, danced wildly while shouting "Mother of God, Blessed Virgin, drive out putin!" After a few seconds they were removed by police. Subsequently, three of the group members were convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" and imprisoned as a result.
Following their sentencing, people around the world, from Björk to the German parliament, from Julian Assange to Bryan Adams, from Madonna to Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono, from Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sting to Aung San Suu Kyi and many many more, expressed their disapproval. Amnesty International even declared August 17 "Pussy Riot Global Day." The women were released in October 10, 2012 (Yekaterina Samutsevich) and December 23, 2013 (Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova);
"When we were jailed, Pussy Riot immediately became very popular and widely known," explained Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova, "and it turned from just a group to essentially an international movement. Anybody can be Pussy Riot, you just need to put on a mask and stage an active protest of something in your particular country, wherever that may be, that you consider unjust."

Right now, HB 3979 is going to be law as of tomorrow (this is the one that is limited and restricted discussions of current events in Social Studies classrooms/curriculum) and a newer bill with far more teeth… More (SB3 which is now HB28) is going to affect Elective and Innovative courses including MAS and the other recently Ethnic Studies Course AAS! And that is just going to put YEARS of our worth of work in jeopardy.
We are actively combating this bill that is currently in the House Committee on Public Education. As of right now, (like last night), the bill is still pending BUT Dan Patrick is threatening withholding funds including retired teacher paychecks if they do not pass the Anti-CRT bill (HB28) and the bill prohibiting trans students from participating in sports (SB2).
So we still have a little time to fight it and make sure it doesn't get out of the committee but time is running out and we are trying to do things as quickly as possible.
