About Footprints On Our Hearts
On April 6th, 2013, at 26 weeks gestation, our sixth child Sebastian died from a tragic umbilical cord accident. It turned our world completely upside down. With a strong urge to do something to help ourselves and also reach out to others, we started this page in late April, 2013. In 15 months we have gained over 2500 friends from around the world. We have found healing and a sense of new found purpose here.
By October of 2013 we had received so many requests to start a closed group that we decided to start our first closed support group. Footprints On Our Hearts PAIL https://www.facebook.com/groups/FootprintsPAILSupport/. In early 2014, we partnered with one of our PAIL group members to create another closed group specifically for those who wanted to explore and express their grief through art. We called it Footprints On Our HeARTs Reflections and it something completely unique in the loss community. You can find it here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/FOOHReflections/.
Our vision for Footprints is to become a non-profit, offering support and creating awareness worldwide. We eventually plan to offer support material to hospitals and birth centers, to have a worldwide network of Loss Doulas, of which Sheila will be one, and to continue expanding our reach online and in local communities.
We live in Oregon and have five earth side children. Sheila has been an Oregonian from a young age. 17 years ago, Jason, a long-time Californian, followed Sheila’s lead in transplanting our family to the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
We both have creative backgrounds. Jason is a musician, writer, storyteller and a Sales & Marketing professional. Sheila’s mother was a prolific artist and it rubbed off. Sheila loves to try new things and has done everything from sculpting with clay and bronze to painting and sewing. She taught herself to knit by making a blanket for Sebastian and has since made baby blankets for other loss mamas. She also taught herself graphic design and video editing. Our combined talents make us the perfect match for our current ventures.
We are so grateful for the overwhelming love and show of support we have received from the loss community at large. And we pledge to continue paying it forward any way we can, for as long as we can.
Thank you for the honor of walking with you on your grief journey! If we can help you in any way, we invite you to reach out.
With love,
Jason & Sheila Garey
