In the news, the Trump Administration is preparing a new temporary pause on refugee influx from designated countries. Unlike the previous one, this one will not make an exception for persecuted religious minorities--Christians, Yazidis, and, from some parts of the named countries, Shiites/Alawites. Faced with the rhetorical/political imperative to criticize the previous order on some ground, Trump's opponents came up with the specious argument that such preferences somehow established a religion in America.
Imagine application of this argument in the 1930s/'40s. Democrats would have had to refuse expedited ingress to Jews fleeing Nazi-dominated parts of Europe. Oh, wait....
