Very proud it's my rep, Tony Tinderholt, who filed the Abolition of Abortion bill. HB 948, linked in the comments.

This bill does three things:

1) Clarifies in the Family Code that personhood and the rights that go along with it begin at fertilization, not birth, and removes contrary definitions throughout Texas statutes.

2) Removes the exemptions from the Penal Code for murder if the person committing the offense is the mother of an unborn child or a physician if the death of the child is the intended result.

3) Places requirements in the Government Code and Local Government Code that the AG and local governments enforce the law here regardless of any federal action or court rulings, and prohibits the State of Texas from making an appearance in Federal Court proceedings related to this law so as to not legitimize them.

Roe v Wade was decided a few years before I was born. I'm of the first generation that's lived our entire lives under this shadow, never knowing the peers, friends, and enemies we never had the chance to meet. The strategy of chasing halfway measures while we wait for unicorns to burst forth from the foreheads of the SCOTUS justices is not a winning one, and it's time we stop pretending it's enough. Texas can lead the way here by standing in the gap and interposing on behalf of the ones who can't save themselves. It's long past time.

Accept no excuses, accept no substitutes!
