Like it or not, the purpose of the Electoral College is to be a check on direct democracy and mob rule.
Whether I agree or disagree with how a particular Elector will vote is not the issue. The issue, at least for me, is that if a State were to take all power away from an Elector to vote in any manner they choose, it would be no different than when the federal government took all power away from the States to choose their Senators.
Centralizing power is completely adverse to the federal system of government on which the Constitution of the United States was based, and yet we continue to blindly support giving evermore power to the government at almost every level.
