PUBLIC NOTICE - AUGUST 11, 2023

Durant Animal Control officers are involved in activities to humanely trap/capture several invasive and non-native animals called Coatimundi.

Like the raccoons they resemble, they may look or act tame or even friendly, but can be unpredictable and harmful to humans and even deadly to small pets. These particular animals are suspected in the deaths of several cats in our area.

Our officers are trained to use the non-lethal tools at their disposal to capture these animals safely as they work to keep the public safe. They regularly consult with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation in cases like this to ensure they are following the latest guidance and procedures.

Please do not interfere with the traps that are set (for which citations can be issued) or the officers as they work to contain these animals.

May be an image of fossa, kinkajou, slow loris and text

Coatimundi can't kill anything bigger than a rat. They mostly eat fruits and vegetables. This is fear mongering, however you definitely should catch them as they were probably pets. Did you try blueberries & cat or dog food? Mine will barely eat chicken nuggets and hates meat. So...

It is a sad day when Animal Control does not know the truth about these animals.

We had one in my dorm in the 70's, it was a friends pet, everyone loved him, his name was Murray Schwartz. The only thing he ever bit into was a highlighter!!!!! I have a photo of him, but this page doesn't allow them... too bad.
