I want to dispel rumors that are running rampant on social media with facts.

Yesterday, in Oakdale, there was a “militia” armed with various weapons. They were allegedly there to protect a business during a possible protest. This group was not invited in by any law enforcement agency in Stanislaus County. This entire incident was handled by Oakdale Police Department. The Sheriff’s Office did provide several deputies to assist in keeping the peace in Oakdale, as did several other agencies. They were all under the control of Oakdale Police Department.

This “militia” has no official standing, no authority and their presence was counterproductive to keeping the peace in the City of Oakdale. Their activities were a drain on law enforcement resources and did nothing to protect the city. Neither I nor any member of my staff interacted with this group. I have never met or corresponded with their leadership.

All of the law enforcement agencies in Stanislaus County work very well together and this week has been a prime example of the effectiveness of our local mutual aid. We have had more than enough vetted, trained and professional police forces across the county to prevent any large scale disturbance, riot, violence or other criminal activity. The vast majority of the people who have protested the tragic and disturbing events across our country were peaceful, polite and exercising their first amendment right. Groups like this militia, regardless of their intentions, are inflammatory and counterproductive in this environment.

It is also inflammatory and counter productive for groups to contribute to the fear by spreading false reports concerning these events.

Oakdale Police, as law enforcement does hundreds of times every day, professionally de-escalated this situation.

If anyone has questions regarding this situation specifically I’d encourage you to speak with OPD. If you have broader questions please feel free to contact me directly.

Most importantly, Please corroborate posts that make direct statements about individual or agency actions. My office will answer your questions directly and as soon as possible . No one benefits by the dissemination of inflammatory misinformation and such actions can do incalculable harm.

Thank you.

It truly saddens and sickens me to think that my hometown would allow protesters and demonstrators to enact their right of assembly and their right to voice their opinion but that same town forbids people to come in and protect their town it truly shows the agenda of the government and that the only time people's rights are truly accepted is when it fits in with the narrative of the powers-that-be

I have a question for the Sheriff and OPD: Is it or is it not illegal for citizens to open carry in Oakdale? If yes, why were these people not cited/arrested?

Sheriff can you tell us if any of your deputies responded to assist the OPD with the calls regarding the militia? If so why weren’t arrests made for open carry?

UPDATED and EDITED for grammar!
The statement by the sheriff carries a lot of bias in it for the educated reader. If the militia was a drain on Law Enforcement resources… its because the Law Enforcement resources chose to direct their attention somewhere it wasn't needed. The militia members are well aware of our constitutional rights and were asked to provide a service to the citizens of Oakdale. They did that peacefully, professionally, and respectfully. End of story. The duty to protect oneself, one's livelihood and one's community falls on the shoulders of the citizens of that community. Law Enforcements purpose is to serve their community. There is nothing wrong with a community taking matters into their own hands for protection if they do not feel like Law Enforcement has the ability or resources to do so. If one has the right to peacefully protest… then an individual has an equal right to peacefully protect himself or his property. End of story sheriff!

I am wondering how were they allowed to open carry when open carry is illegal and they are not law enforcement nor military/reserve troops.

An armed society is a polite society. We have seen the Governor giving orders to officers to stand down, I don’t think for one second people are going to allow their city to be looted.
I support protest as long as your freedom doesn’t impede on someone else’s, but from the first hand information people are getting, it’s best these militias come out and protect in case their police dept has their hands tied

Well put. However, we have all seen "law enforcement" back out of the way and let criminals pillage and plunder, loot and destroy. They were only there as assistance. Turns out they weren't needed. Turned out nicely.

California banned open carry years ago. That being said, you can LEGALLY open carry on private property with the owners consent just like you can on your own property. As long as they weren’t brandishing or pointing the weapons at anyone, it’s not considered assault. They were peaceably open carrying on private property.

Let me ask you something Sheriff. Are you or are you not a voted member? Do you even study the Constitution? Did you know it is the job of the Sheriff to uphold the Constitution as he/she is the only recognized law enforcement in the constitution? You are the last line of defense before We the People take control of the situation and handle it ourselves. Do your job and quit fear mongering and stand up for those Patriots that were doing their heart felt civil duty. Quit being apart of the problem and be the solution. If you cant bring yourself to do this then step down and let someone who is willing to take that role seriously.

Just one question, why weren't they immediately arrested, cited, or removed? They know the laws. If that had been a protester I'm absolutely positive, something would have happened. So to say the police did not support their intimidating, silencing, presence is hard to believe. Your saying what you are saying now because people have seen and know. Your actions spoke differently. You all know who that group was, I'm sure some kind of action can be taken.

Screw these 1st amendment pontificaters when they get and the way of me being late for an appointment. Scream and yell all you want on your soapbox but do not deny me a peaceful life. If I can hear your rhetoric from my rocking chair you are Disturbing my peace. I have a right to my peace. And, I am willing to sacrifice for my peace and the peace of those around me. If that philosophy gets in the way of your Philosophy, that puts us at a crossroads.

Thanks for the great work Cory and Amber! Godspeed.

May be an image of 2 people and people standing

Today we bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Cory & Amber Brown. The Stanislaus Co Sheriff’s Office is incredibly grateful for their many years of selfless service and dedication to their craft. Cory was a long-time homicide detective, while Amber was one of our crime scene investigators/technicians. They made quite a team and helped to process countless crime scenes in the search for justice on behalf of so many victims. The Brown’s are on to new adventures, and we wish them well in retirement. Bon voyage!

Rebuild and Reclaim Operation in Stan County results in 62 arrests

For the last several years, for Human Trafficking Awareness Month, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office conducts a statewide operation to identify suspects and victims of human trafficking-related crimes.

This year Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office hosted Rebuild and Reclaim with the City of Turlock - Turlock Police Department, Stanislaus Probation, Oakdale Police Department - California, Stanislaus County District Attorney, Stanislaus State Police Department, Newman Police Department, Los Banos Police Department, CHP - Modesto, Tracy Police Department, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation - Parole Division, Haven Women's Center of Stanislaus.

In total 62 arrests were made for various charges ranging from probation and parole violations, prostitution, soliciting prostitution, supervising or aiding in prostitution, narcotic sales, and weapon possession charges.

One subject was arrested for attempting to meet up with what he believed to be a 16-year-old female.

The partnership with all agencies involved resulted in the operation in Stanislaus County a success in identifying human trafficking victims.
