“Summer of 2019 - Hong Kong will not be the Same Again”

Academic Year Commencement Ceremony, in one of Hong Kong top secondary school

It began ordinary enough, as any commencement ceremony at the beginning of a new academic year would: students stood in attention, as principal, form masters, and teachers ascend to the stage of the school hall.

Then everything changed come the time of singing the Chinese National Anthem.

For instead of hearing the Maoist lyrics designed to fan patriotic fervor, all one could here now were the students’ voice of defiance, expressing their yearning for freedom by singing in unison:

“Do you hear the people sing?Singing a song of angry men.
It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart, echoes the beating of the drums.
There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes!”

The students sang the lyrics twice, just enough to cover the whole of the Chinese National Anthem playing time, then stopped just abruptly as it began.

Then the ordinary routine appeared to take hold again, with singing of school song, the Principal’s report and speech, and so on.

After a full 8 minutes of an apparent “business as usual”, there came the moment when it finally dawned on everyone: Hong Kong will never be the same again.

It was the same calm, steady voice of the senior student who doubled as the master of ceremony for the occasion. But instead of just announcing the end of ceremony, she spoke as the voice on behalf of her generation:

“Last but not least, I would like to share my personal point of view to the audience:
“We all climb the same mountain, though in different ways”* Everyone will play different roles, (interrupted by standing ovation from the students) and we will discharge our duty in full.
Whatever hurdles there laid, we will bravely face.
Look to your fellow students, and look back to the way we have all traced...
And embrace our core values in “no backstabbing, no distancing, no schism, and no blame-laying”* (another round of standing ovations and cheering)
I wish you well, my fellow students, may the new school year be a productive one, and may our dreams come true.”

There raise the singing voice in unison “Do you hear the People Sing?Singing the song of every man...” with intermittent chatting of “Liberation of Hong Kong! The Revolution of our Times!”, “Answer to our Five Demands in Full” till the ver end.

*These are some of the principal slogans for the Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Movement, in essence embracing diversity in approaches and honoring our unity at the same time.

(I would suggest downloading the clip first, for the possibility is high that the school authority might retract it at a later time.
Note:1)2m 10s:The Chinese National Anthem was drowned by “Do you hear the People Sing”, 2)10m 8s:the MC’s sharing of her generation’s yearning for freedom

2PM update: As expected, the original clip was being retracted. No only that, the school has shutdown their whole official YouTube channel. Fortunately, many has downloaded and repost the clip, albeit without captions (yet).

Let’s pray for the young and brave ones, especially the little girl who dared to speak out on stage. For in her calm and steady voice, it is as if she has spoken on behalf of her generation:
“We are no mobs, but we won’t cede an inch of Hong Kong anymore.”
