Hispaniola Ornithological Society and Environment Ministry unite for Bahoruco
On Wednesday, 30 October, the Ministry of Environment announced a new initiative for the environmental protection of the Bahoruco Mountain Range in the southwest, a lush area on the border with forestry-devastated Haiti.
Minister of Environment Bautista Rojas Gomez signed an addendum for inter-institutional cooperation with the Hispaniola Ornithological Society to include the NGO American Bird Conservancy (ABC) in conservation work in Bahoruco. Joint strategies will be implemented for the management of the Bahoruco Mountain Range National Park and the Loma Charco Azul Biological Reserve. Rojas Gomez signed for the Ministry of Environment and Jaime Moreno for the Hispaniola Ornithological Society.
The agreement covers a series of activities to ensure sustainable protection of the ecosystems and reduction of the effects of climate change. They include the continuation of the project for the development and conservation of the Bahoruco Mountain Range that includes signage of the critical areas and fundraising for conservation projects. The program involves the purchase of control and surveillance equipment, construction of two nurseries for native and endemic plants, construction of park ranger houses, and hiring and training of park rangers and administrators. The plan also includes work aimed at gradually reducing the illegal penetration and infractions in the protected area and establishment of permanent watch service.
