MISSION STATEMENT:
Canyon Country Rising Tide (CCRT) is a grassroots organization based in Moab, Utah that works to confront the root causes of climate change on the Colorado Plateau. We educate the public on regional climate justice issues; we organize residents to speak out and take action against extreme fossil fuel development; we support local efforts to build just, sustainable, and climate-resilient community infrastructure; and we collaborate in a direct action campaign to stop tar sands and oil shale mining in Utah.
WE ARE an all volunteer grassroots organization based in Moab, UT. We are a chapter of the international Rising Tide Network.
WE DEMAND an immediate end to the expansion of fossil fuel extraction, exploration, and production in the region, especially tar sands, fracking and oil shale.
WE ADVOCATE for a “just transition” away from carbon-intensive and water-wasteful energy production and towards small-scale, local, renewable energy production, owned and managed by the community. We see the need for a fundamental and systemic shift, a restructuring of values away from endless growth and profit, towards stewardship, equality, human rights, and sustainability.
WE SUPPORT the protection of the land through litigation and other forms of “legitimate” political action. But, while lawsuits linger in court and lobbyists petition a political class with deep ties to the fossil fuel industry, companies are actively building infrastructure, expanding roads, and making huge scale strip mining operations a reality. Because of this,
WE ARE DEDICATED to using creative, strategic, non-violent direct action to engage, educate, and empower the people of the Colorado Plateau to rise up to protect and defend our home, the Earth, and her people.
CLIMATE JUSTICE:
Rising Tide’s tactics are diverse and creative, taking a bottom-up approach to connecting the dots between capitalism, colonialism, corporate power, social justice, bio-centrism and the environment. Combating climate change is not solely a matter of carbon emissions, but of confronting power structures rooted in exploitation of people and the earth.
The Climate Justice Movement weaves our community-based struggles into a greater story. Rampant growth, the debt-crisis, “free-trade” agreements and ensuing collapse of local economies around the world, migration, extraction, exploitation of the world’s people, and unsurpassed environmental destruction are all tied to the unrestrained forces of capitalism–the same forces which push our climate towards a dangerous tipping point.
Everywhere in the world low-income, politically marginalized communities –historically the least responsible for CO2 emissions– are also those hardest hit by climate change and every aspect of the energy industry from toxic pollution to resource wars to forced migration. The framework of climate justice attempts to elevate the voices of people on these front lines and to create new systems where people working in the grassroots can lead the way in creating the change we all need.
Climate justice is more than a goal; it’s a practice that is an integral part of the movement to respond to climate chaos. No effort to create a livable future will succeed without empowerment from the ground up. The international Rising Tide network now spans countries on four continents. We know that whatever we achieve in our local struggles is amplified by the energy of the growing global movement for climate justice.
