We look forward to seeing you all the rest of the weekend!

If you have COVID, you are REQUIRED to remain home. We are testing temperatures at registration badge pickup. We also have implemented temperature spot checks. We're using several different brands of temperature sensors, to ensure that inaccurate results do not result in any exposure.

For your information, many of our guests, including me (our president) and my daughter who is also attending as a guest as well, received negative COVID-19 test results before the event; we don't have COVID. Many top convention staff have been tested for coronavirus the week prior to the convention and have received negative results as well.

If you've seen the photos from this weekend, you'll see higher mask compliance than any local store or restaurant. We're very serious about being safe.

The reality of the current situation is that actors, artists, and vendors are hurting because of events and conventions shutting down across the country. They're hurting deeply. Many of them may be evicted once the eviction moratorium ends in January. Many are running out of funds and can't pay their bills. We are holding Anime Dallas this weekend in order to help provide support for them.

We've seen significant vitriol online about attending Anime Dallas. We're so disheartened to see that. This show has never been about profit. Every year we are raising money for charity. Our event is about bringing some security and revenue to these vendors, artists, and actors. Our event is also about community. This community means very much to us. Anime has been our job and our livelihood for a long time for many of us.

In regards to suggestions to take the convention virtual, online conventions have resulted in less than 10% of the income for artists and vendors. Online conventions can not replace the experience and community that can be found at in-person conventions.

We believe the Corona virus is real and dangerous. That's why Anime Dallas has highly enforced mask adherence. That's why we require social distancing in all event rooms. That's why we do temperature checks at badge pickup. That's why we have seating restrictions. That's why we enforce social distancing.

I want you all to have a safe, fun time at Anime Dallas. If you don't feel safe coming, we're absolutely prepared to refund your pass. We can see you another time or at another event. That's okay!!

But for those who struggle at home without their con friends, for those who are vendors and need to pay their bills, for those who can't exist without this community, that's why we put on this event,

So thank you for understanding why we're putting on an event for this community. For being reasonable about everyone's need to be here in some way. And for being part of the anime community.

Whether or not you agree with having the convention, we are wishing for your continued health and safety.

With all the love in the world,

John Swasey

Not having a temperature doesn’t mean you don’t have Covid. Many don’t have any symptoms and have had it. Mandate masks at all times

Considering the amount of ASYMPTOMATIC CASES meaning NO FEVER AND NO OTHER SYMPTOMS this is an awful idea atm. Vaccines are coming this will be better eventually but not if we don't take it seriously. Things like this are why it's still so bad. Not everyone listened and here we are.

So you mentioned that you did this to help vendors and artists, but let me ask a very vital question:

Can you confirm that you offered any vendor or artist a refund if they wanted to cancel due to the pandemic?

Any artists/vendors able to confirm if you were offered the opportunity?

I love it when sone people respond with the, "PEOPLE ARE DYING, DON'T YOU CARE ABOUT THAT?!! YOU ARE SELFISH!!" REEE!!! Okay, if you're so worried about the beer virus than stay home and isolate yourself from the rest of the world, and leave normal people alone. Alot of us still like to continue with our lives and not have an irrational fear of a disease with a small death rate of 290,000 out of a total population of 328 million, also a very high recovery rate.

Fun fact: my kids have COVID and no symptoms besides a scratchy throat. No fevers, no wheezing, still tasting and smelling. If we hadn't been following all COVID guidelines in Michigan, there's no telling how many people my kids could have affected.

New studies confirmed that the virus does not stop at 6 feet like we'd originally thought. Get this: Covid actually has a range of ALMOST TWENTY FUCKING FEET.

It doesn't matter how much you try to spread people out. Hosting a con is irresponsible and WILL get people killed. Not "might". WILL.

There's less than 100 beds in the ICUs of Texas (which has a massive population mind you), and you think hosting a convention at the height of a pandemic gets a pat on the back? Have you gone insane?! PEOPLE ARE DYING!!! HOSPITALS ARE GETTING SHORT STAFFED!!! HOW FUCKING SELFISH ARE YOU?!

I mean, anime conventions are already notoriously unsanitary and unsafe, so, I guess hosting one during a global pandemic isn't much of a leap, huh? 🤔

If you test negative today for covid it
Doesn’t mean you won’t test positive tomorrow. I’m really surprised at the lack of education regarding the virus.

I hope you’re listening to all these comments. Not just the ones here but all across social media.

Whatever good intentions you had keeping this con open it’s backfiring in a colossal sized way.

I honestly have nothing more to add here then what’s already being said but lord knows the anime community has spoken back and have let their voices be heard.

If you think for one second this was to benefit anyone, your about to wake up to a rude awakening.

Y'all really said chickenpox party but make it covid. This pandemic is getting worse and y'all just expect people to come in not sick?? In all my years of cons I've never been a day where randos aren't making out with each other, partying in different hotel rooms and sharing liquor straight from bottles. You are out of your minds if you think that's not going to happen during bthis event you created. Shame on y'all.

Tests are extremely inaccurate without symptoms so your testing a week before is absolutely useless and pointless. Your event will be a superspreader. Hope you’re proud of that. Idjits

The first line says “If you have COVID you are required to stay home.” Idiots, that’s the problem. People who have it don’t KNOW they have it. How is this event even legal to host at this point.

Y'all have to remind folks about basic hygiene at these damn cons and you seriously expect folks not to take their masks off? You know people who know they have Covid symptoms or even have been diagnosed with Covid are going to see this and take their asses to it. You could've easily had an online con and proceeds from the virtual tickets go to the same charity or even be used to help boost the artists you're using a shield for this super spreader event in the making. This was a selfish decision.

who's gonna tell them you can test negative for covid and still have it and be spreading it because the incubation period is 14 days? temperature checks and negative covid tests from a week ago mean next to nothing. this is shockingly reckless and you and everyone who attended should be ashamed of yourselves.

I'm sorry, but this is incredibly irresponsible...do you not see or even care how bad things are with the pandemic right now? Do you even care that we're in the middle of the deadliest stretch of the pandemic so far? Obviously you don't. I don't understand why you couldn't have done what literally almost every other con this year from March has done and provided an online event while promoting the artists and vendors using your platform? Shame on you for potentially being responsible for potentially thousands of people getting sick and possibly dying because you had to be special.

It's not like more than 1 in 30 Texans have this disease.

At least there's room in the hospitals for the your attendees after your con turns into a super spreader event.

Oh.

Why didn’t you test all of your employees? Why don’t you account for asymptomatic people? Why say this isn’t for profit when you describe the reason for reopening as for the profit of artists? Why not donate all proceeds to charity?

You all deserve to be absolutely clowned by the internet because I don't think the idea of your event being the reason people are going to get hurt isn't getting through to you. If being trolled on the internet is the only bad thing that happens to your company based on having a con in the middle of a pandemic, that's really the BEST possible outcome... You deserve every single bad press review, every trolling comment, every investigation, every audit, and every letter from the families of people who attended your event and suffered consequences because of it.

So, as both someone who has helped run conventions and has been a vendor at cons big and small, if it's true that you are only allowing 250 total people in at any given time, I can guarantee most vendors are going to have a hard time recouping costs, and many may end up losing money by being there. Likely the same with artists. This is especially true when you consider overhead, gas, possibly hotel costs, food, and every other cost accrued over the weekend, on top of the $400 vendor table. The likelihood of people making anywhere near a profit worth saying "it's about them" is extremely low.

You can say it's for them but if that's the situation, you would have possibly done them a bigger favor by cancelling and refunding them. Especially if someone gets sick and now the bills they have to worry about aren't rent, but hospital bills, which I guarantee are far worse.

This is disgraceful. People are going to die and this will absolutely contribute to the recent COVID spikes. Yes, we all want to go to conventions and do fun things right now, but we have to wait a while longer and this is beyond irresponsible. And to have a buffet? Unbelievable. At best, this makes the community look bad and at worst, people get sick and die.
