About AKILA INDIA KATTIDA THOLILALARGAL MATHIYA SANGAM
AIKTMS was established and registered on 17th July,1995 in the presence of eminent personalities who include Valapaadi K. Ramamoorthy, G. Kalan (INTUC Gen. Secretary), U. Balaraman (Ex-MLA, Congress), Ramanibai (Congress Committee), V. Rajasekaran (Ex-MLA). It first started out as a an association that helped bridge the gap between the common construction worker and the government and helped the workers in successfully negotiating with the Government in the granting of relief packages, aids and funding.

The founder and successful builder, M. Panneer Selvam, was a prolific member of Tamil Nadu Desiya Kattida Thozhilaalar Mattrum Amaippu Saara Thozhilaalargal Peravai and INTUC around the 70s where he met his mentor and inspiration, “Guardian Angel of Construction Workers” R. Kulasekaran.

With R. Kulasekaran as inspiration founder M. Panneerselvam later founded AIKTMS with 1000 members amongst it’s folds. With time AIKTMS built it’s members base and today it has more than 32,000 registered members and at least 1,10,000 members being affiliates and unregistered members.

In 1997, as a result of the founder’s longstanding dream of taking AIKTMS to international status, M. Panneer Selvam with his immense effort affiliated AIKTMS with Swiss based BWI (Building and Wood Workers’ International). BWI is an international organization which concerns itself with safety and welfare of construction workers all over the globe.

As a result of it’s association with BWI, AIKTMS and it’s members have benefitted in many ways. BWI has helped in bringing Indian construction workers and their skills to international standards by organizing workshops, training sessions and seminars.
