Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada have been promising open, fair, and transparent nominations as the backbone of their campaign, but they have already broken this promise on multiple occasions.

In Dec 2013, I was approached by MLA Darshan Kang (currently a nominated candidate from Calgary Skyview) and Senator Grant Mitchell to run as a Liberal from Edmonton Mill Woods in the 2015 election. I had been involved with the Liberals as the constituency Vice President and Secretary for nearly 10 years during David Kilgour’s victories, and I have lived in this constituency for more than 22 years, so this was an opportunity I felt I was ready to accept. I received my Green Light from the party in March 2014 and I was promised that there would be a nomination prior to Edmonton’s Sikh Parade in May 2014 so that I could campaign as a candidate there. In April 2014, however, I found out that Councillor Sohi came into the picture, and since then everything has stalled on the nomination front. Various party officials met with me in May, June and August 2014, pressuring me to withdraw my name in favour of Councillor Sohi so he wouldn’t need to contest a nomination. They tried to bribe me, threaten me and ultimately expired all my memberships by delaying the nomination beyond December 31, 2014 in the hope that our team would not renew their memberships. Once they noticed that a large number of members had started renewing their memberships, the party used their last weapon to revoke my Green Light by accusing me of membership infractions. This is only the second case in all of Canada where the Liberal Party has gone out and cancelled a candidate’s Green Light. Coincidentally, the other one was also in a riding where their preferred candidate (General Andrew Leslie) was at risk of losing in a nomination.

In a large campaign such as mine, I cannot make all the members on my own. I gave forms to my volunteers and they brought the forms and money back. As per the party’s National Membership Rules Section 8.5, it was the party's responsibility to validate the members before they went on the official list, and they were on the list until they expired on Dec 31, 2014 so they were obviously considered valid. The party did not highlight any concerns to me until after their preferred candidate came. If the members were actually bogus, the party was supposed to return the forms and fees back to them according to Section 8.7 of the same document, but has not done so to my knowledge. My Green Light was cancelled on January 16, 2015, and all of the people that had renewed their memberships at that time had signed up online so there shouldn't even be any question about that. I even offered the party that I am willing to open my bank account and show that only ~$2000 cash was withdrawn from the account and every other transaction is traceable, but obviously the party didn't agree since they had their mind set on cancelling my Green Light. If they were really worried about so-called “membership infractions”, they could have notified me as soon as they found discrepancies, but they never did anything like that because this was solely an excuse to pave the way for their preferred candidate. If they really cared about justice, they would at least allow me the opportunity to appeal this decision; the party officials even went as far as including a line in their letter to me saying they were using their ultimate power to prevent me from appealing.
We’ve all seen parties breaking election promises after they get put in power, but this is the first time I’ve seen a party breaking their own promises before getting elected. If this is what is happening now, what will happen if they are leading our country? I am a liberal-minded person, but I don’t know if I can make myself support this version of the Liberal Party of Canada, which is seemingly missing any sense of ethics or democracy. I will be talking to my supporters to decide what our next course of action should be.
