A little while ago, we kicked off our #GameChanger series by asking various members of our development team, "What was the game that changed your life?" Today, Studio Design Director, David Vonderhaar weighs in with his own experience:
"If I have to pick one (which is akin to torture!) it would be a MUD (multiple user dungeon) called Infinity. The year was around or about 1992. Think Zork, but with multiple-users all connected via Telnet. It was completely text-based.
What is particularly interesting about Infinity is that when you “won” the game, you then optionally had the choice to become a wizard. I don’t mean a pointy-hat, staff-wielding wizard who shoots fireballs at hobgoblins. In Infinity, a wizard is someone who adds to the game world. He can create new rooms, mobs (monsters) and quests for other players using the scripting system built into the game engine. When you won the game, you became a game developer.
If it weren’t for this experience and the enjoyment I got out of it, my career likely would have taken a different path entirely."
