My take on UFC fighter pay, being an entrepreneur and fighters complaining about money (NATE DIAZ).......

Nate Diaz and I both came from TUF. When you come from Ultimate Fighter, you learn a lot more to have a better and longer career. Once in the UFC, you prove yourself, win fights, make the fans happy, be a good person and everything follows ($$).

Ultimate Fighter puts you on a three year contract with the numbers not being as good as one might think, but if you show your worth and do good, you'll get the numbers you want. Behind the scenes money never gets released to the public but they do take care of those doing good (Nate Diaz shows publicly 1.2 million and that's not even all the bonuses).

All he needs to do is fight and he will make 6 figure FOR SURE. I am probably looked at as his easiest fight. If he beats me, it's an easy pay day and he will probably cut in line for title (more money).
You don't fight, everyone WILL forget about you and your career will be over. This sport moves too fast. If anyone thinks the sport hinges on one person, you're crazy, someone just takes your spot. Too many hungry people looking to earn their way to the top like myself.

You have a problem about the way you're treated or the money you're making? SIMPLE- Call the source and explain. Then fight, win and earn what you want. It's the same concept as any job. It's more of a sales job, because you show good results, you get a lot of incentives.

When you make little money like me or a lot of money like Nate, what you do with your money is all on you. If you don't have much, it's nobodies fault but your own.

At the same time, this is the greatest sport in the world because anything can happen. Because anything can happen, you need to be smart with your money and focus a lot of your free time on investing and having a backup plan.

I've never had much money until I got in the UFC, so I know what that feels like and do everything in my power to not go back to that. I cherish every dollar I get and try to grow it, not stop it. Also, I figured out what I am good at and my passions, mixed those to start businesses to increase my income, which again, I invest it all so the money is making money. That is my entrepreneur side, which continues a lot further, but you get the point.

Long story short, I'll end with a couple points.....
#1- You want something, do a good job and EARN IT.
#2- Don't piss in the hand that feeds you.
#3- You signed the contract, you honor it. Your job is to fight, so you FIGHT!
#4- Bully tactics never work. It just sets you up for bad karma.
#5- You were offered the fight a week ago. Accept or Deny it by July 6th or I am moving on far away from your negativity.

Everything above was meant with nothing but respect, based on business truth. I just needed to get it out there, which I feel should make sense to anyone with a job they committed to.

Every fighter is replaceable with a new and younger talent. When Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture retired, there were 10 new guys waiting and eager to take their place. If you've never heard of Myles "Fury" Jury, than apparently you don't follow MMA very closely. The Diaz Brothers are good fighters, but they're both a couple of douche bags. Stay humble Myles, you've proven that you're gonna be a top contender in the lightweight division. #imposemywill

Nate is taking for granted something some people dream of doing and that's having a profession in the biggest MMA fighting organization in the world and he's complaining about money. Like you said if he wants money he's got to show up and perform. I really want to see this fight happen! Hopefully he pulls his head out the gutters asap.

No one coerced Diaz to sign his contract and as a man, he has the duty to honor it. If he wants to re negotiate, he has to keep fighting and winning and not bite the hands that feed him. Bullying tactic might work if you're the biggest PPV star but if you're just like others who are still working their way up the rankings, you might want to take it down a notch and have a realistic view of your status.

"All he needs to do is fight and he will make 6 figure FOR SURE."

Nate was paid 15K + 15K for his last fight. He SHOULD be making 6 figures though. Quit trying to bully him into signing the contract. If he was being paid properly, he would sign immediately. You know that if he rejects the fight, it would make him look like he's ducking you, so he's doing the right thing by waiting until he has his contract sorted out.

Jeff Wright- Re-read again sir, because you're wrong. 15k/15k was when he took a large up front check instead of per fight. He's made over 1.2 million not counting all the checks not released to public.
I am not bullying one bit. I'm just looking for respect by him accepting or denying so I'm not left on the sidelines in this hold pattern. At the same time I'm pointing facts since there is a big misconception of what is going on.
What Nate is doing to the UFC is the definition of bullying, which I'm totally against. Had he did this during negotiation period before happily signing a new contract, I'd do nothing but praise him for standing his ground.

You should move on from Diaz and ask the UFC to set up another fight ASAP for you. You are a young, improving fighter who is on the rise in his division, and unlike Diaz, you are willing to prove it by fighting whomever they put in front of you. Let Diaz take his cloud of negativity somewhere else. This is a sport where fighters fight, and fans want to see fighters fight, not hear about how underpaid and under appreciated they are! You are the type of fighter people will pay to see fight, Diaz is just part of that freak show who will sit by on the sidelines and watch as their limited prime fighting years slip on by, bitching the entire time about what shoulda, coulda, and woulda happened. Keep on being a doer Myles, that is what the fans pay to see!

I'm not sure I agree here. It may come off that Diaz is a selfish kid or maybe, just maybe... he's leading the way so fighters aren't just getting Dana White's table scraps.

I'm with Adam. I was fine with the facts about pay, but the "couple points" bothers me. EARN IT? Nate Diaz has 19 UFC fights. He has earned the right to negotiate. Athletes have been negotiating contracts while under contract forever. My personal opinion is, if Nate is making 120k per fight he should fight. But, he has every right to negotiate and refuse to fight until he is paid what he thinks he deserves. I believe Nate is worth far more than 120k per fight based on his popularity and track record for exciting fights, but the UFC apparently doesn't agree and that's just the way it goes. Were both Diaz brothers not "real fighters" only a year ago according to DW? Now they aren't because they dare to challenge the pay scale and ask for more. Jury calls this bully tactics... yet it happens in every other sport every single year and it's just part of the game. You want MMA to be a sport, well you now have it and everything that comes with it...

Luke Hansey- This will be my closing comment now that I have moved on and am no longer dealing with this scenario. Plus you're missing the whole picture.

Earn it? Yes, in the negotiation period. Not after you happily signed a new contract one fight ago. The negotiation period (once you complete the previous contract) is when it is ok to hold out for more money.

Yes, he's making more than 120k per fight. So you're right, he should fight.

I don't understand what people aren't getting here.. Nate signed his contract for his pay structure. He CHOSE to have a lump some of money paid to him up front. Nate is 1-2 since signing his most recent contract and is demanding more money? People have said "but athletes re negotiate their contracts all the time" yea you're right, but name an athlete that is losing or had slipping numbers that re Negotiates their contract FOR MORE MONEY. bottom line is this.. Nate himself signed his current contract, no one forced him to and he got paid how he wanted. He has lost more than he has won since signing his contract and is demanding more money. Give me a break. Finish out your contract which I believe is 1 more fight THEN re negotiate
