A little love on a Saturday, Off The Wall…

Kathy Mcferrin writes…
“Wow what a douchbag you have been with this whole Masonry competition thing. You came off very badly my stupid friend!”

Tigernan Douglas Quinn says…
“I see you’ve stooped to scolding little girls about their character. That's lovely.”

Derek Hanna reveals…
“I never realized you were such an asshole. Very disappointing.”

Howdy kids. How’s your weekend going? I’m going to take a wild guess and assume you’ve been pursuing the headlines over at The Raw Story. https://www.rawstory.com/2016/06/tv-star-mike-rowe-trashes-ohio-girls-character-after-shes-stripped-of-prize-in-contest-he-helps-run/ Am I right? I knew it!

Back in college, I had a professor named Dr. Vatz who taught a wonderful course called Rhetoric and Persuasion. I remember an exercise where we were instructed to take an article from the local paper, and without changing the underlying facts, rewrite it in such a way that left the reader with a completely different version of the truth. To this day, I think about that exercise whenever I come across an article whose sole purpose is to make people angry.

Happily for the writer in question - a guy named Tom Boggioni - The Raw Story does not appear to be terribly concerned with the facts. I suspect his future there is a bright one. However, since I have nothing better to do on this fine Saturday but defend myself from the slings and arrows of outrageous bloggers, I thought it might be fun to juxtapose “The Raw Story, as told by Tom Boggionia” with “The Real Story, as told by Mike Rowe.” Perhaps if Dr. Vatz sees this, he’ll let us know which version is the more fanciful…

The Raw Story: HEADLINE: “TV’s Mike Rowe Trashes Ohio Girl’s ‘Character’ After She’s Stripped of Prize in Contest He Helps Run”

The Real Story: HEADLINE: “Mike Rowe Defends the Importance of Fair Play - Encourages Observers to Look Beyond Politics and Gender Stereotypes in Recent Controversy.”

The Raw Story: TV host and pitch man Mike Rowe took to his Facebook page to address the controversy over Ohio teen Shania Clifford being denied a spot in a national masonry contests and ended up smearing her character in the process. Rowe, who hosts the Discovery Channel series Dirty Jobs and is affiliated with contest sponsor SkillWorks, responded to a question on his Facebook page about Clifford based on an article found here on The Raw Story.

The Real Story: Yesterday on Facebook, Mike Rowe answered hundreds of readers who asked him to comment on a petition demanding that a female contestant be allowed to compete in a competition she didn’t actually qualify for. Rowe, who now runs mikeroweWORKS - the countries most visible foundation in support of the skilled trades - is a longtime supporter of SkillsUSA, (though he has nothing to do with “running” the organization.) In that capacity, Rowe responded to an article that first appeared in The Columbus Dispatch, and was subsequently picked up a number of websites desperate to generate traffic by ginning up imaginary controversies and posting unflattering images of Rowe’s giant and wrinkly face.

The Raw Story: Clifford thought she was going to a national leadership and skills conference after coming in first place in a SkillsUSA Ohio masonry competition, only to find out that her spot had been awarded to boy who came in third. It was later determined that the scores had been input incorrectly. However Clifford was never notified and only found out that she wasn’t passed over by reading about it on Facebook.

The Real Story: In a most unfortunate mistake, Shania Clifford’s actual score in the Masonry competition was incorrectly entered into the master spreadsheet, leading all concerned to assume that Shania had earned the highest score. In fact, she had not. Unfortunately, Shania was not properly notified about the discrepancy and got the bad news on Facebook. The good news is, the mistake was corrected, and the student with the highest score went to the Nationals.

The Raw Story: Clifford’s place in the local competition was downgraded to third based upon the correction in the scores, but she was still allowed to keep the first place gold medal after the controversy embarrassed all involved. For some reason this annoyed Rowe who, after explaining the errors involved, pushed the teen to return the medal to prove that she is a person of good character while playing the “everybody gets a trophy” card.

The Real Story: Rowe, a longtime critic of so called “participation trophies,” was troubled by the fact that so many uninformed observers would rush to sign a petition demanding Shania be rewarded on the basis of a clerical error. He encouraged Shania not to allow anyone to define her as a victim of gender discrimination if such a claim was untrue - which it clearly was in this case. Rowe also pointed out that those demanding “justice for Shania” were not acting in her best interest. In fact, Rowe went so far as to imply that those who signed the petition were insulting all women in the most insidious way possible - by demanding special treatment based on nothing but gender. Rowe then asked, “Would anyone be demanding “justice for Shania,” if she were a boy? How in the world is it good for women to benefit from a clerical error? When Steve Harvey mistakenly awarded the title of Ms. Universe to Ms. Colombia instead of Ms. Philippines, should the mistake have gone uncorrected? Should Ms. Colombia be Ms. Universe today, simply because Steve Harvey screwed up?”

Finally, Rowe offered Shania some unsolicited advice that would surely catch the eye of a prospective employer - he encouraged her to “return the Gold Medal, along with her sincere thanks for the opportunity to compete, her heartfelt congratulations to the actual winner, and her steadfast resolve to come back next year and kick some serious ass.”

The Raw Story: After the uproar over the SkillsUSA competition went viral, Clifford was given an invitation to compete in the Mason Contractors Association of America’s convention next year.

The Real Story: After the uproar over the SkillsUSA competition went viral, a dubious assortment of hysterical activists masquerading as journalists continued to look for a story that simply wasn’t there, and encourage people with no real knowledge of the facts to sign a bogus petition. The Raw Story actually accused Rowe of “trashing Shania’s character,” when in fact, he did nothing but point out how important character actually is. Even now - after the Columbus Dispatch clarified their original story - The Raw Story continues to fan the flames of confusion and self-righteous indignation, driving many of their nearly two dozen readers to clutter up Rowe’s Facebook Wall with the kind of insults most often associated with a petulant eight-year old.

Adam Goodrich - You're right. Media is as much "social" today as it is broadcast. And there's no good reason to assume that something you hear from a celebrity has any more inherent credibility than anyone else with a pulse. The difference between me and The Raw Story though - or any other media outlet - is that I would never ask anyone to take anything I say at face value. I've always encouraged everyone here to question everything you hear from me. And I always will.

The ones who royally screwed up were the idiots that input the scores wrong to begin with. Im sure it broke this girls heart because she was told she won and believed it, only to find out she didn't. And not finding out in a dignified way but via Facebook. Certainly SOMEONE dropped the ball here, on many fronts. However, Mike Rowe isn't it. And the point he is making about her using this as an opportunity to stand out in her character, is 100% correct. I don't discount her feelings being hurt, but the real world does not care about our feelings. There is a silver lining in this unfortunate human error and it's for her to be the bigger person. It takes far more effort and discipline to be the bigger person, which is something that most adults could do a lot better job of them selves.

First, this "Tom Boggioni" is almost certainly a nom de plume for an outsourced journalist in a third world country.

Second, I am sad to say that Mr. Rowe's rebuttal just drove thousands more readers (including me) to support this ad-driven site full of garbage, clickbait headlines.

Finally, the couple dozen folks who wrote in to trash Mr. Rowe are letting piss-yellow journalism like Raw Story guide their thoughts and decisions.

To those couple dozen folks: If you happen upon this comment, please know that you really need to examine your life and what you allow to influence your brain. There is no doubt that you screwed up, but you didn't screw up in a fatal way (it is more than likely that no one else will ever even know of your error). Please take this gift of an opportunity and grow from it… and, for Pete's sake, stop clicking on Raw Story links!

Thank you for clarifying that. I, for one, read your Facebook post on the subject and thought that, rather than Shania 'winning' due to a clerical error, she had legitimately won, and the young man sent to the national competition had, after the fact, been bumped to first place because of a clerical error in the process of entering HIS scores...

Needless to say, this left me scratching my head over several aspects of the story, as well as your response...which seemed rather out of character, I thought (which left me feeling like I must have missed something).

Your 're-write' of the Raw Story article actually cleared up ALL of my personal confusion on the matter, and makes your response much more comprehensible. Hopefully, a good many of your critics on the matter will find and take the time to read your reinterpretation of Raw Story's piece, and realize just how off-base that writer was.

Thanks for keeping it real.

To be honest, I read the raw story first, it was slanderous, but when I read your quote in the article, I still agreed with you. Maybe it's actual content people are missing in a story, because all these reactions seemed based off the title of the story. No one should be pandered to, that's how people develop entitlement issues.

Glad you posted this Mike! Reading your opinion on this subject the other day I was impressed by your thoughtful response and reasoning, and most especially the compassion for and advice to this young woman. Imagine my surprise when I saw the headlines and content - such as it was - from the Raw Story. It goes beyond sensationalism and in to utter nonsense, and I'm still not sure to what end.

I always love your responses to nuttiness Mike. Raw Story - a lesson in the dangers of self-publication. Not sure who is worse, the writers who create the drivel they post or the readers who actually believe it.

LOL! Only Raw Story would try to make it seem like you were in the wrong, Mike, but really not. The little princess needs to get over herself and her white knights need to shut it as well.

As always, brilliantly assessed & clearly expressed. The Raw Story is, ever so obviously, not interested in this young lady's future- and the writer involved probably had to scramble to look up the word 'character'. I hope the girl comes to understand what's at stake, here.

I never cease to be amazed at how entitled people on the Interwebs feel to call a total stranger an "asshole" without hearing both sides of the story. <sigh> Of course, what do you expect from people who consider The Raw Story a legitimate news organization? Folks, really, it's time to grow up.

Thank you Mike Rowe for being an advocate for character and integrity. I am just returning to real life after chairing one of the competitions at SkillsUSA's national conference. Every single contestant in my area was highly skilled and did an outstanding job, but unfortunately there were many tears shed when they did not win. Since when did being better than everyone else become such a focus in life? If a contestant gave their all and did their best, the internal satisfaction is their own win! Thank you for your support of this organization!

First off after reading the raw story version I thought "hmm this seems a little out of character for Rowe to react like that". Not that I know him personally but he does a lot of real talk that know one is really talking about.
Second I though at this point everyone understood the fact the any media source has the ability to change the real story to point in whatever direction they would like. This is why the internet is soooo damn important. We wouldn't have known any different if it wasn't for Rowe to tell his side. Never believe the media. Google any story you read and look for variations in the story.
Thank you to Mike Rowe and everything you do!

Here's my take from reading both sides of the story: Nothing in the story about running a clean competition and the integrity of those who do and what that says about the future of the competition and the perception it gives to future competitors; instead the character assassination is passed off on a girl that was just trying to compete in a predominantly male occupation. Yikes.

You speak and practice something called common sense and a lot of people don't see that. If she didn't win she didn't win plain as that. Her parents should have asked her to give the medal back and congratulate the winner...that is something called proper parenting. I knew the moment I read this headline there was more to the story than the slanted biased media version.

Having just read this story, I find Mike Rowe's thought ls to be well stated and forthright in expressing his oppinion. I did not read anything that would make me believe he "trashed" a young ladies character. BUT he did offer her some unsolicited advise, and good advise at that.

That all being said, I don't believe there would have been an issue with allowing the young lady to participate this weeks competition, though it is too late now. What harm is there in those running the state competition from saying, "hey, we screwed up, and too show that we are stand up folks who own our mistakes, we won't deprive someone who genuinely though they had won and celebrated and made plans to attend the national compitition from going. We will assure that our mistake does not have adverse impact on thise we were charged with serving as the directors of the state competition. Just my thoughts.

Mr. Rowe,

In my opinion, You are a constant delight and staggering representation of a true mentor. It's very hard for me to imagine the strain you must feel when trying to not only, "do the right thing", but to also teach a proper lesson of character to today's youth, only to have the entire situation turned against you.

I will offer some personally opinionated advice concerning participation awards. No, I don't agree with them. However, if society continues to deem them a politically correct necessity, they should be fashioned to resemble the classic "Facebook thumbs up". Simple enough, but the reality its just one of my half witted attempts at sarcasm.

Thanks for sharing the story. Luckily I haven't seen an article on the "raw story" prior to this post. Of course I don't typically regard drive by media reports as being very credible either.

Oh and by the way. I've seen several "memes" joking about Morgan Freeman narrating people's life stories. Well not me. I want Mike Rowe!

Once again, I have read a post written by you and have been left bereft of proper "Facebook official" response. Would a "like" be siding with a girl who, under other circumstances be praised for the breaking of gender normative stereotypes, doesn't really have a horse in this race as the facts show. Or does it support unbiased reporting of the facts of the situation? Personally, I feel for her. As Mike suggests in both the raw and real story, I would hope she demonstrates true moral fiber and content of character and personally award the true winner with the medal and a promise to smoke his sorry behind next year!

Mike, I did read the story yesterday and agree whole heartedly that your take on the whole incident, as well as your unsolicited advice were right on the money.
She had nothing to gain, at that point, by keeping the award, and everything to gain. It was well written and I wish everyone was brave and bold enough to think things through and say it like it is. I applaud you!

Just from reading and following along with you here, I knew that what they were saying couldn't be true. I think you are a feminist in the best way. Dear Mr. Row, I'm not sure if you will actually see this post but please know my boys and I have liked you from the moment we heard your voice on various Discovery shows to the moment we started watching you on Dirty Jobs! We liked you then and have grown to love you now! We are and always will be huge supporters of you! I refuse to read ignorant blogs such as The Raw Story! These blogs are geared toward ignorant readers who want "jump on the ignorant band wagon" and attack with a "mob" like mentality! Ridiculous!! I am a strong minded and determined woman who believes in working hard to win and even harder to make my mark in woman history! I won't cheat nor will I force myself onto or into male based organizations to prove that I am a strong, determined woman! I am so sorry for the trash talking you have had to deal with and strongly encourage our future woman to make your mark in woman history without leaving a mark!

I have to admit, after reading the original story and then The Raw Story I found The Raw Story to be much funnier, showed more imagination and it had greater appeal to the reader. I'm sorry Mr. Rowe, but your professor would have graded them higher than your original story. Good luck to you in whatever you choose to do with your life, but I would avoid hatchet journalism as a career choice.

Mike Rowe thank you for everything you do. I admire you for your character and passing along very wise words of wisdom to this young girl. I also admire you for making the sorry individual that started all of this responsible for his actions by calling his behind out on this.
People really need to get a life instead of trying to stir the pot with misrepresentation of a story. I for one hope the person is shamed, and embarrassed and the jerk will be looking for employment elsewhere. We certainly know journalism is not his calling, well responsible and accurate journalism anyway.
Keep on keeping on Mike.

As a woman who labored in "male dominated" fields and workplaces most of my working life without the benefit of social justice warriors, I thank you Mike Rowe. Character matters! And I'm not surprised to see Mike Rowe standing up for it. Hi Mike, I read the real story yesterday. As much as I love your writing, I can't bring myself to read this entire post because of The Raw story...I'm afraid I'd get so upset at the balderdash that I would drop my phone and I can't afford a new one right now. Oh for God's Sakes!! Mike Rowe simply pointed out the obvious. The organizers should have told this gal about the screw up well before she got to hear about it in the media. THAT is the bad part of this story. Mike's not wrong. It IS a indication of character to only accept prizes and accolades you've earned. It was solid advice and she should be proud he gave a damn.

Wow! I am a girl (well, an old girl anyway) and I read your story. I found your explanation spot on. However, we all know people who, no matter what, will find a way to misconstrue the situation to fit their feelings. I say "Carry on Mike Rowe, carry on!"
