Here are a few data points you may want to ponder after the shooting in Florida:

The student population of public schools in Texas is over 5.1 million, which is more than 28 States have residents.

Including charter schools, Texas has over 1,300 school districts that account for the over 8,000 campuses.

According to the Texas School Safety Center at Texas State University, between 2000 and 2010, there were a total of 29 school shootings out of all public schools in the United States.

For context, there are almost 14,000 school districts that account for over 130,000 campuses across the United States with a combined enrollment of over 55 million students.

That means that less than 0.0002 of all the school campuses in the entire United States experienced a shooting during that period.

Now, compare that data to the 1990 – 2000 CDC study that found over 2,000,000 injuries and 147 deaths of children ages 14 and younger that were “playground-related”.

So when you hear people scream, “Something must be done!” after a tragedy, such as the one in Florida, just remember; the State of Texas does not have a gun problem.

Additionally: the Gun-Free School Zones Act (GFSZA), originally passed in 1990, is wholly unconstitutional. It’s time the States tell the federal to stand down when it comes to guns.
