EDIT 2/23/2022: Please stop calling SLTPD dispatch to voice your opinion about Hank. They're being inundated with aggressive callers, taking away from their ability to handle actual emergency calls. See our most recent post for more details.

"Hank the Tank," our big bear friend who has adopted the Tahoe Keys neighborhood as his residential area, is trying harder and harder to prove to the Keys HOA that they need to allow bear boxes 😉

On Catalina Drive this morning, Officers Sullivan and Wallace responded to a report of Hank inside a house. They banged on the exterior of the home until he popped out a back door. They then stayed in the area to ensure he continued on his way without damaging any other homes.

This bear did not break into a garage where trash was kept that he was sniffing out. He broke into a secured home, through the small window in the photo, and somehow squeezed inside.

When needed, our officers are trained to use deterrents such as loud sirens, dry-firing their tasers (makes a clicky-clack noise that the bears hate!), and beanbag rounds to remind bears that it's not very nice to break people's property!! We want them to go back to their homes in the forest.

EDIT FOR TAHOE KEYS RESIDENTS: To apply for a bear box, call the HOA front desk, Monday-Friday 830am-430pm and Saturday-Sunday 830am-1230pm. Apply for a bear box, for a fee. An Architectural Control Group will help you meet the site placement requirements and get a bear box installed.

Thank you officers. And hurray, bear boxes now allowed in Keys. If you live in Keys, apply NOW!

Doreen Green A Bear box is a secure metal container. It is installed in a homeowner's front yard near the curb, and trash cans go inside of it. Then when you take the trash out, it goes into the metal box, and you lock the door. When the trash company comes, they open the doors and remove your trash.

I heard that there have been talks of killing Hank after he is captured. That would be very unfortunate as there are numerous zoos and sanctuaries in the surrounding areas. We are on Hank’s land. Not the other way around.

Devin Lavender Hi Devin! That's kind of the difficult part of all this. According to the Bear League and CDFW, relocating a bear that is so urbanized and so accustomed to eating/finding food so easily, can cause more harm than good. If relocated back to the wild, or even to a sanctuary or preserve, his mental health can become severely damaged and he may be unable to find food on his own or possibly be attacked by other bears in those areas. This situation with Hank is a tough one, but our local wildlife agencies are all working together to determine what is best for him and his health!

Kristin Robertson Vicki Lamborn Hi Kristin and Vicki, we did not say anything about Hank being killed anywhere in this post. Our local wildlife agencies are working together to figure out what the best option is for Hank, his health and safety, and the safety of our local residents. Relocation is a tough process with a lot of red tape, and could cause serious harm to Hank since he is so accustomed to living in our neighborhoods and finding food in/around homes. However they are working to figure out available options for Hank! No one wants to see him be euthanized, which is why it isn't mentioned anywhere here.

Keys HOA should be paying restitution to the homeowners who residences were broken into by Hank. By banning bear boxes they invite bear problems... an eight year old would know better than the Keys HOA.

How about you teach the people who live in Tahoe how to protect their houses from bears and not blame the Bear who was likely taught to go to those houses because they left food out...

Ian R Gustafson Hi Ian, please don't assume that we don't push bear safety in this community. As you can see in this post, the vast majority of residents have secured their homes, vehicles, garbage, and anything else that could tempt wildlife to enter their property. Hank, however, is becoming more persistent as he ages and grows, and is breaking into occupied, secured homes by breaking down doors and breaking windows. Our community is very familiar with living in bear country. Our local wildlife agencies are working together to find out the best solution for Hank, as it is clear he can no longer stay here.

What is a bear box??

Wiegand Sandi A bear box is a secure, locking, metal container installed in a homeowner's front yard. Trash cans go inside the bear box. So when you take the trash out, you take to the bear box so bears can't get into your trash like they might if it were in a garage or outside. When the trash company comes, they open the bear box and remove the trash.

Melissa Chapman Hi Melissa. As you can see in this post, and in dozens of replies on this thread, we have not mentioned killing or euthanizing Hank in any way. The SLTPD does not have a say in where Hank lands. Our local wildlife agencies are working together to figure out the best solution for Hank, his health, and for the safety of our local residents. They are the experts and this decision is up to them!

I just feel like killing the animals is probably a little bit extreme there has to be ways to make it work for everyone involved hungry bears included

The Keys don’t require bear boxes???!!! We’ve had them in Tahoe paradise forever! What is the story here? No bear box in Tahoe, no right to complain about bears. Believe me. My family lived it. No bear had to die though. No bear box rule is a disgrace!! Bears are more than log carvings on your porch.

The inevitable is only being delayed. We have seen this whole thing play out in NH. Bears are wild animals and don’t belong in a sanctuary or relocated It was tried here and it still resulted in the bear being put down a year later. Once a bear enters a home it sadly pretty much signs its own death sentence.

Florida FWC told the residents of our neighborhood to "DEAL" with the coyotes. They've killed over 80 pets in under a year. Encroaching on territory is what has caused this. It's a shame, but it's a part of life.

El Dorado County passed a law several years ago that requires residents living above 4,000 Feet altitude to use bear proof garbage cans. I really cant believe HOA's were exempt.

Thank you officers. We will continue to have these types of issues because people are moving further into areas where bears and other wildlife live. Also some may enjoy feeding them but don't realize that this can later lead to the bears enjoying human junk food, leading to break-ins and health problems within the best population that humans have. Let's learn to love our wildlife from a distance, and to respect others space to keep both the human and the wild life population safe. Thanks for humanely dealing with these issues.😘💜🐻.

He is home. Humans colonized his home though. Regardless, a wildlife sanctuary in Colorado said they'll take him and the governor of Colorado approved it. Maybe try doing everything you can to protect and save him from humans instead of trying to hunt him down to terrify and execute him.

The Russians, who have a lot of experience with bears, send their most difficult cases to Romania for rehab, including a couple of alcohol bears, the topic of the story linked to below. The trip is expensive, but there's plenty of people in the Bay Area who can't resist funding such things. https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-31622170
