Info over School Butterfly Project Malaysia
Despite Malaysia being a hyperdiverse country suffering from rapid biodiversity loss, we feel there is a lack of awareness, appreciation and concern among the local population. The School Butterfly Project aims to increase awareness of local biodiversity and instil a sense of wardenship for local wildlife among schoolchildren through a citizen science project focused on a charismatic group of insects, the butterflies.
The School Butterfly Project involves simultaneous surveys of butterflies by groups of schoolchildren from schools across peninsular Malaysia. We will fix four survey dates during November 2014, March 2015, May 2015 and September 2015.
The initial stage of the project (August-October 2014) involves our team visiting schools to establish the network, motivate student involvement, and provide training on how to conduct the surveys.
During our school visits, the School Butterfly Project team will conduct an interactive (2 hour) session covering:
1. lmportance of wildlife
2. Climate change
3. How to sample butterflies
4. How to identify butterflies
5. School Butterfly Project and how surveying butterflies relates to wildlife conservation and climate change.
We’ll provide the schools with all the equipment necessary for the surveys, and a large poster for display in the schools features a countdown to the survey dates.
Note our butterfly surveys do not involve killing the butterflies, this is something we want to avoid. The butterflies are caught in nets, photographed and a single leg removed for DNA barcoding before being released. Studies have shown that loss of a leg has no negative impact on the survival or breeding success of butterflies.
Legs will be mailed to Museum Zoology UM where the DNA barcoding will be performed and the schools will receive feedback on the identification based on the DNA analysis which they can compare with the field identifications and photographs.
The School Butterfly Project team plans to visit the schools again after 2015 to provide a report on the project.
The School Butterfly Project is supported by UM CARES and MUSEUM ZOOLOGY UM at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.
