About Save Virunga
Virunga National Park, Africa’s oldest National Park and home to the last mountain gorillas, is under imminent threat. Currently more than 80% of Virunga NP has been allocated as oil concessions. There are many precedents which have shown that oil exploration will lead to serious loss of biodiversity and ecosystems and increased poverty-conflict in the region.
Save Virunga represents multiple opinions, perspectives and viewpoints of organizations. First and foremost, Save Virunga gives a voice to local communities who depend on the survival of Virunga for their livelihoods. We believe that the local voice needs to remain local and that communities and civil society have a say in the decision and future of Virunga.
