Mayor of London

My letter to the Prime Minister, demanding answers, action and justice for those affected by the #GrenfellTower fire.

Dear Prime Minister,

I spent several hours yesterday talking to local residents around Grenfell Tower. These were difficult conversations with a tight-knit community that is understandably distraught, frustrated and increasingly angry. They feel the Government and local council haven’t done enough to help them in the aftermath of this horrific incident, or to provide answers to their increasingly urgent questions.

I promised the local community that I would fight for them to get the support and answers they deserve as quickly as possible. I am therefore writing to you today to set out the action that I believe the Government needs to take, as a matter of urgency.

Victim support and information

The local community feels their grief has been made worse by the lack of information about their missing family members and friends. They are fully aware of the true scale of this tragedy but cannot comprehend why they are not being given more information. There is also insufficient support for victims on the ground.

I appreciate that the authorities want to be absolutely certain that any information is correct before it is issued publicly, and the fire brigade, police and coroner are doing a heroic job obtaining this information in extremely difficult circumstances. While the current systems in place may work well for a terrorist attack, there are legitimate questions about whether they are still appropriate in situations where obtaining this information could take much longer.

I would ask you to ensure that the local community is given as much information as possible today and over the coming days about the number of victims and their identities. Additional capacity for victim support needs to be provided urgently. In the longer term, I would urge you to review whether the current systems are appropriate for all emergency situations and operate at the pace required.

Relief organisation

The community are concerned about the organisation and coordination of relief and support services across Kensington. I heard multiple stories of local residents not being able to access the information they required and being given conflicting advice by the local authority. This complaint came from local residents, volunteers who had come from further afield to help, charities and local community groups. The scale of this tragedy is clearly proving too much for the local authority to cope with on their own.

Those affected are still not clear about the support available to them – either immediately or in the longer term. For example, the local authority believe they found housing for all residents affected last night, however there are reports that this was not communicated effectively and some residents are still sleeping in the Westway Sports Centre or with family and friends. Please confirm as a matter of urgency that everyone from Grenfell Tower and other evacuated properties will be rehoused locally immediately.

Although additional local authority resilience arrangements have been activated today to provide additional leadership to the local operation, I would urge the Government to provide all necessary assistance and satisfy itself that the operation is functioning to the standard local residents have the right to expect. The Government should also confirm that all residents affected by the Grenfell Tower fire will be rehoused in the area, unless they choose not to.

Tower block safety

Residents I spoke to are worried about the risk of this tragic incident happening elsewhere – particularly in tower blocks that have had similar cladding installed as part of renovations. People are terrified that the same thing could happen to them. I raised this with Ministers on Wednesday and Thursday, and they agreed to lead coordinated efforts to ensure that all other tower blocks across the country are indeed safe.

This issue is not limited to the type of cladding fitted; the material it is attached to and how this has been achieved are also critical factors. It is crucial that other risks from renovation works are urgently and properly investigated, for example protection between floors. And we need to strengthen standards and recall processes around white goods, given the fire risk they can present.

I would ask that you to provide a list of those tower blocks already checked by the end of today, as well as a timeline for the remaining buildings. I would ask that you to set out a timeline for this process today. If the Government has any reason to believe specific tower blocks could be at risk, residents should be rehomed in the local area immediately, while these checks take place.

Please also confirm that there will be an immediate implementation of the improved safety rules proposed in 2013 but still not implemented.

Public Inquiry

The community around Grenfell Tower have many questions about how this was allowed to happen. They urgently need to be assured that they will get all the answers. I welcome the announcement of a full independent Public Inquiry, but we cannot afford to wait years for the outcome.

I would urge you to ensure, in the terms of reference of the Inquiry, that an interim report is published this summer, at the latest, and that the terms of reference include all aspects of fire safety standards and inspection in high-rise towers. I would also urge you to ensure that residents and other interested parties are not saddled with any legal costs for participating in the inquiry, and receive the quality legal representation they deserve. Finally, I would seek an assurance that if the Inquiry or police investigation finds any individual or organisation to have been negligent in their duties, then they will be prosecuted.

As the Mayor of London, I will continue to fight alongside this community to ensure they get the support and answers they deserve and justice done.

I look forward to hearing back from you today.

Yours sincerely,

Sadiq Khan
Mayor of London

Good letter and fair points. However, I believe that you and the PM should urgently get together to agree a joint approach to this. Because the situation at Grenfell has all the elements to boil over badly. We have a lot of grief, anger, frustration building day by day. There are also a lot of people gathering there. This weekend is going to be hot. The last thing we want is repeat of previous events where these elements have combined to create riot. What you could do is together agree an immediate fund per person of say £2k ? To but essentials. At same time go to all the big company PR teams and ask if they would like to donate to the residents who have lost everything ? For instance Apple could dish out a few hundred iPhones; Nike some trainers; Nando's some meals etc. Very quickly that £2k per person fund would grow to about £10k per person. The companies would look good and feel they had done something. Then you could solve the problem of the current "over aid" - allow the community centre to distribute the food to food banks; sell the clothes and keep the money for the community. Last but not least - immediately find housing for these families - its ridiculous that some are still in sports centre. The minimum short term should be a hotel - Premier Inn I'm sure would give a discount. If you lost your house this is what you'd expect from your insurance company so why not these residents. It would be good if you could do this together rather than the normal cross party politicking. I have no love for May but at the moment its like watching an accident happen and not being able to do anything about it. No-one wants this to boil over into more tradegy and you and May have the power to stop this.

Ah ah what a letter, so who is in charge of london councils? Who is in charge to check the anti-social behaviour of the company who manage the block on behalf of the council? What about to be less present in the media and more acting on london and Londoners problems? We have the Media Mayor!

Work together with the PM rather than making demands and effectively trying to pass the buck. You are the mayor of this city, take some responsibility. Too many politicians are more interested taking advantage of the vulnerable and whipping the crowd up into a frenzy than actually doing anything to help......

Excellent Letter Mayor Khan. I hope the PM will reply to you quicker with a positive thought in her mind regarding acting fast and putting so many desperate people at ease. IMPORTANT. Also Mayor, should there not be some sort of Council housing system where they should not house the Elderly, The disabled and families with Young children on tops floors of tower buildings in places like London, Birmingham and Newcastle and many others. Please can you also look into this issue because many vanerable people can escape easy during this dreadful times thus saving many lives.

Dear Mayor of London. Is this not your city. Are you not on the watch to get a grip and lead this rather than demanding the Prime Minister does? Has she not already got her hands full leading us out of the EU, handling terrorist cobra meetings and corralling a shower of moaning MP's to get their act in gear and Govern the Country! Or I am missing the plot, Mayor of London, your watch, your city, your time to do something rather than jaw ache about it and ask others.. perhaps as you are not doing your job, you could donate your pay to those impacted by this tragedy - rather than using social media to publicly call for others to act. Get a grip and serve your community with action

Action, please, action, Mr Mayor!!!

I am no fan of Theresa May but she is the Prime Minisfer for heaven's sake. She is running the country, not in charge of the maintenance of one council block!!!
YOU must tell her what you want her to do spefically.

What do you need? How and when things must be done and by whom!

Passing on wishes serves no purpose as Theresa May, like yourself, has absolutely no clue what and how things must be done in this situation.

Those impacted were and are the poorest of the poor by any standard. They rely on people in power such as yourself to take action to help them. They don't need you to be their messenger. The media has done that for them already. And I believe they have done a much better job.

Sending a wishy washy letter to an ineffective Prime Minister just proves how useless you are and how meaningless the title Mayor of London is.

The Prime minister has already confirmed that there will be a public enquiry. There will also be inquests. Local government has the responsibility for housing and there are questions to be answered. There may be criminal prosecutions as well as civil litigation. Questions cannot be answered overnight. Everything needs to proceed as quickly as possible but it won't be within weeks. Sadiq Khan penning an open letter to the PM does not really progress anything. He has certain environmental powers as mayor and needs to look at what action he can take as regards other tower blocks. He should concentrate on that and not political capital.

Good luck, lets hope she reply back soon.....
Well done Mr Khan keep up the good work.

I do also think that high-rise towers should be knocked down and replaced with lower towers so at least safety is not much of an issue with fire.
And every tower should have jumping mats (sheets) community come together to help and save other if they need to jump from burning towers
Lets not see anymore like this again.
This made me sick to my stomach. My heart goes out to everyone who have lost loved ones and everything.

I agree that more should be done by central government to prepare for incidents involving mass casualties. God Forbid we had something like 9/11. How is it possible, that in the 21st Century, it can take almost a week to identify survivors in hospital. I know people will scream about this, but time for a nationwide DNA database?

Good points Mayor Khan. I am just wondering why fire brigade did not use helicopter to kill the fire. I am sure they should have a helicopter like other emergency services.
