FABRICATED CHURCHILL QUOTE STILL BEING PROMOTED

In an article tonight in the Yorkshire Post, a fabricated quote by Winston Churchill is once again being promoted in support of Brexit, writes Jon Danzig.

The author, Dr David Hill of Huddersfield, claims that Churchill would be against Britain's membership of the EU.

Dr Hill asserts:

‘Indeed in the House of Commons on May 11, 1953, he said: “We have our own dream and our own task. We are with Europe but not of it. We are linked but not combined. We are interested and associated but not absorbed. If Britain must choose between Europe and the open sea, she must always chose the open sea.”

‘Therefore, from his own mouth, Churchill would not surrender our sovereignty and join the EU.'

This was my response to the Yorkshire Post letters section tonight:

"In fact, Churchill never said this in Parliament, let alone on 11 May 1953. The quote is a fabrication and represents a betrayal of our great war leader.

"The quote has been concocted from an article that Churchill wrote in 1930 (ironically in support of the concept of 'The United States of Europe') and from something he shouted in anger to the French leader, Charles de Gaulle, on the eve of the Normandy landings in 1944.

"To stitch these two quotes together, said years apart and in completely different contexts, and then to pretend he said this to Parliament in 1953, represents a serious deception.

"To then use this stitched-up quote to claim that Churchill would back Brexit is a shocking misrepresentation of his views.

"Churchill was a strong advocate of a European Union, and although in the 1940s and early 1950s he did not envisage Britain joining (primarily because we already had an Empire), he later changed his mind as it became clear that our Empire was finished and our Commonwealth severely diminished.

"Churchill was also not in principle against abrogating sovereignty in the right circumstances.

"In a debate in Parliament in 1950 about a united Europe, Churchill said:

'We are prepared to consider and, if convinced, to accept the abrogation of national sovereignty, provided that we are satisfied with the conditions and the safeguards.'

"This can all be confirmed from Hansard, and also by referring to my own research on this, which includes embedded links to the sources of evidence (link below).

"In respect to Sir Winston Churchill, I hope will you correct your article, and not repeat the deceptive quote again."

Churchill believed in eugenics and wanted to basically murder the 'disabled and feeble minded'. It was thanks to Lord Wedgewood that his plan came to nothing. Oh and when I had my tonsils removed, he died, you're welcome. He was a nasty person and certainly no hero of mine.

He passionately advocated the European Convention of Human Rights, which of course makes illegal the 'murder' of the 'disabled and feeble minded.'

On Quora someone asked: '‘Why is an openly racist leader like Winston Churchill still celebrated in Britain?’ This was my reply:

War is nasty, and you probably need only nasty people to fight it. To win a war, it's essential to be brutal, and war in itself brutalises people.

I hate all wars, but as wars go, the Second World War, fought against the rapidly spreading virus of international fascism, was essential to win. Churchill was our key to that victory, and thank goodness for that. A nice guy would have succumbed and waved the white flag before the first shot was fired. And remember, we almost lost: victory was by no means a surety. Without Churchill, we might now all be under Nazi rule.

You'll notice that immediately following victory, the British people gave Churchill the order of the boot, and chose for peace an entirely different kind of government and leadership. Britons realised that for war, yes, we needed a ferocious fierce bulldog of a man to urge us to fight and fight until the last breath. Outside of war, we sought something much more humane.

Our adoration of Churchill wasn't blind; it was pragmatic.

Churchill the warlord saved Britain, and it's only right that we forever recognise him for that. But outside of war, Churchill also proposed ideas to help the planet achieve lasting peace, including the concept of a United States of Europe, a world government, and a European convention on human rights. Churchill wasn't all bad; neither was he all good. Name any human who was, or is?

That's no doubt true, but Winston Churchill still holds great sway, especially with the older generation. Many of that generation, if they sincerely believe that Churchill would have been against Britain's membership of the EU, may well vote accordingly. This nasty, fabricated, deceptive quote should be stamped out.

WETHERSPOONS BOSS CALLS FOR MORE EU MIGRATION

One of the most prominent supporters of Brexit, the boss and founder of the pub chain Wetherspoons, has called for more EU migration to help tackle the shortage of bar staff.

You’d think this was made-up news, but it’s true, it’s shocking and it demonstrates rank hypocrisy.

Tim Martin told The Telegraph, "The UK has a low birth rate. A reasonably liberal immigration system controlled by those we have elected, as distinct from the EU system, would be a plus for the economy and the country.

“America, Australia and Singapore have benefitted for many decades from this approach. Immigration combined with democracy works."

His comments follow reports of a chronic staffing crisis in the hospitality sector, resulting in pub and restaurant owners having to close during lunchtimes.

It’s clear that Mr Martin hasn’t a clue about how the EU’s free movement of people worked when we were a member, which he suggested was not democratic.

But all EU rules are democratically decided, and free movement has been a boon for Britain, helping to fill jobs for which we simply didn’t (and don’t) have enough Britons to fill.

Putting up barriers to trade with our neighbouring countries, and barriers to their citizens coming here, and our citizens going there, has zero benefits.

So why did we do Brexit? Search me.

→ Watch and weep – 6-minute compilation video

YES, THE PM IS USELESS, BUT THAT’S NOT ENOUGH TO SHIFT HIM

By a strange set of circumstances, which some of us would call a perfect storm, we now have the most incompetent and dangerous Prime Minster in living memory.

He is popular, although his popularity rating seems to be in decline.

Nonetheless, with a weak and uninspiring Opposition, there is a chance that Boris Johnson could be in power for many years, leading the country in a direction that many of us don’t want to go.

Just as exceptional circumstances brought us a decade of Tory misrule, culminating in a Boris Johnson premiership, it will take exceptional circumstances to replace him with safer and saner leadership.

Here are some ideas, but yours are just as important, if not more so.

→ We need opposition parties to work together. They probably won’t, but they should, and if they could put the country above their parties, they would.

→ We need an opposition leader whose personality appeals to the people. Yes, I know that will be an anathema to many, especially those who liked Jeremy Corbyn and thought he’d make a good leader.

But it matters not a jot if you or I like someone. The nation as a whole has to warm to a leader. Yes, it’s a personal thing.

→ We need an opposition to offer policies that both excite and appeal to a broad section of the country. With our voting system, no party can win without the support of those who don’t usually vote for them.

That’s a fact, not an opinion.

→ We need an alternative government not just to appeal to the country at large. We need them to be brave and bold, and offer new, truly radical policies that will both set it apart from those now in office, and to animate and arouse us.

What could those policies be? Well, here are a few outline proposals. They are not all my ideas, some have already been put forward by opposition parties.

→ A universal basic income for everyone. Yes, everyone would have enough; an essential income for all. For anyone to live in poverty in the UK – especially children – is shocking and unacceptable in the modern age.

→ Truly green public transport. People are getting excited about electric cars, but that won’t be enough to tackle climate change. The issue is not so much what fuels the cars, but who owns them.

For most of the last year in lockdown, my car has been on my drive, and I doubt I’ve driven more than 100 miles. It shouldn't be that way.

We need excellent, reliable, green public transport that’s so inexpensive, most of us won’t want or need to own our own car anymore. Who’ll pay for that? To start with, those who insist on car ownership for private use only.

→ Free higher education for all, and lifetime learning for everyone, subsidised by the businesses who need clever people to work for them. Education is an investment in the future and wealth of the whole nation and provides huge returns.

If Britain wants a world class workforce - and it does - then the government, not just businesses, needs to be an "Investor in People".

→ A massive investment in green farming across the UK. Our government must do much more to help our farmers to enable Britain to be more successful and sustainable in feeding its people.

→ A new system of voting; proportional representation, that most countries in Europe have now adopted. Our current system of first-past-the-post means that governments get into power that most people have not voted for.

Most people did not vote for the Tories in the 2019 general election, and yet they achieved an 80-seat majority with only 1% more votes than they got in the 2017 general election, in which they lost their majority entirely. That cannot be right.

→ The United Kingdom to be an equal partnership of its four members – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

That’d mean the UK becomes a true union of four sovereign states (if that’s what they want) acting on a similar model to the EU's 27 nations. It’s just not acceptable or sustainable for England to be superior to the other three.

→ Closer relations with the EU, leading over time to negotiating and applying to rejoin. That will likely take some time, because the relationship has been so damaged. The first step could be to rejoin the Single Market.

→ Subsidised fast internet broadband for everyone, paid for by the businesses who make billions out of us being on the internet, and whose business models simply couldn’t work without it.

So, these are some initial ideas, but of course they are not nearly enough.

The debate about what country we want Britain to be, and the polices to take us there, needs to take place years in advance of a general election, not just weeks before one takes place.

That means now. Yes, it’s urgent.

What ideas do you have that would set the nation on a new and better path to the one we’re now on?

I agree with your suggestions Jon, though I would include an intent to change our voting system from FPTP to a system of PR.

We have seen the damage which a rogue government, such as we have at the moment can do to the country when it gains an 80 seat majority with just 43% of the vote.

In our current case, it means that over half of the electorate are without an effective voice and can be ignored, which displays an obvious lack of democracy.

It would mean, that for most of the time, in order to form a government, coalitions will have to formed.

Would that be such a bad thing? It would mean that such such a government would be able to represent a broader section of the electorate, which would be more democratic and also be in a better position to hold a maverick prime minister in check and make a repeat, especially of the last 5 years extremely unlikely.

Susan Edwards I don't think it's ambitious enough! Many hotels, restaurants, hospitality companies are short of staff right now. The fact is that Britain (outside of Covid times) has millions more jobs than Britons to do them. That's why we need migrants, and millions of them. It's a truth the public should be told. Brexiters are in for a shock. Many said they didn't like EU migrants here. Now, there are plans to replace them with citizens from India and Hong Kong. After listening to his stand-up routine, I would like to tell him not to give up the day job. But giving up the day job is exactly what I want him to do! The sooner he disappears from the political scene, the better I shall like it.

It annoys me when he is described as the worst PM in living memory. He is actually the worst in the entire history of British democracy. Don't sell him short.

Charles Priestley That may be so, but I said in my living memory. Personally, I can only compare him to the Prime Ministers I have known. Historically, it may be true that he is the worst, but not necessarily. Some categorise Lord North as one of the worst; It was Lord North who picked the fight with the American colonists and managed to oversee a disastrous foreign policy which led to the French, Spanish and even the Dutch siding with the fledgling United States against Britain.

Are you familiar with the history of all Britain's Prime Ministers; have you studied them?

It is about time that our very dangerous PMs timeline is flagged. He goes from feigned blunder to blunder where as I actually feel this is a smoke screen to what is very calculated actions on his behalf. People laugh at how he acts, the choice of words he uses. People too busy laughing to notice actually what he is doing behind that laughing mask.
With regards to the ideas around what a United opposition could achieve, I agree. Do I feel that all opposition parties are at that point? I am not sure. What I am certain is that this NEEDS to happen if we, as a country have any chance of moving forward in an equal way to challenge the laughing tories and the destruction they are leaving in their wake.

BORIS JOHNSON’S BLUSTER BLUNDERS

In public office, Boris Johnson spends the country's money as if there is no tomorrow. Our money. Your money.

But there will be a tomorrow, and someone will have to clear up the almighty mess he is going to leave behind for us.

Whether it’s purchasing and painting ‘Brexit jets’ for his use, commissioning a £200m Rule Britannia ship (and we all know it will cost buckets more) or as London Mayor, his garden bridge or Boris bikes loss-making bungles, Johnson’s vanity only brings Britain insanity.

Not to mention his failure to save tens of thousands of lives avoidably lost to Covid-19, and his “oven-ready” Brexit deal that so many are now finding to be indigestible.

Or, under Johnson’s watch, the contracts costing hundreds of millions of public money given to government ‘friends’ without proper tendering, for PPE and testing facilities that didn’t work out.

Fellow Britons, please learn. This is a Prime Minister not acting in the country’s interests.

Unless we can rein in his reign of pointless, profligate expenditure, our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will be paying for Boris Johnson’s bluster blunders for many decades ahead.

YES, THE PM IS USELESS, BUT THAT’S NOT ENOUGH TO SHIFT HIM

By aMore strange set of circumstances, which some of us would call a perfect storm, we now have the most incompetent and dangerous Prime Minster in living memory.

He is popular, although his popularity rating seems to be in decline.

Nonetheless, with a weak and uninspiring Opposition, there is a chance that Boris Johnson could be in power for many years, leading the country in a direction that many of us don’t want to go.

Just as exceptional circumstances brought us a decade of Tory misrule, culminating in a Boris Johnson premiership, it will take exceptional circumstances to replace him… More

With all the blunders, and all the lies, and all the corruption, which we all knew about because of his career, he was STILL voted in??? It’s unbelievable really. My image of him, is when he came down that zip wire holding those little flags, then got stuck and was left dangling. Apart from ANYTHING else, that was NEVER a leader!!! What’s wrong with people????

There's a lengthy pattern of impulsive, attention grabbing projects that result In ridicule, a tragic waste of money and monumental.failure but he escapes recrimination. I despair. He doesn't even project as sincere, well informed or efficient and has an Interesting technique of evading appropriate answers by answering a different question to the one asked or resorting to buffoonery Terrifying lack of grasp of his role and the seriousness of our situation..

And now his latest blunder:

Dr Deepti Gurdasani, a clinical epidemiologist and senior lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, said the situation was “entirely predictable”, adding that while many experts have been calling for early action, that window of opportunity has now been missed.

“When government was claiming that these outbreaks were localised, it was very clear that B.1.617.2, while at different frequencies in different regions, was rapidly increasing across all of England, which meant that the variant would become dominant even where it wasn’t frequent in a matter of weeks – and this is exactly what happened,” she said.

“Now, we have a highly transmissible variant, capable of a significant level of escape from vaccines – especially after a single dose – leading to exponential rise in cases in many areas,” she added.

But yet people continue to vote for his Conservatives......fail to understand why he is so popular!!!! But sadly the opposition parties must take some ‘blame’ for his success. Labour for example elected the wrong Miliband brother after the 2010 election and then a most unsuitable leader in Jeremy Corbyn. Unless the progressive parties including Labour come together and form a tactical alliance, we will be stuck with Boris Johnson for a long time yet.

Not forgetting the gaudy looking RAF Euro Fighter decked out in the Union Flag, when the RAF roundels have served us well for over a century.

That was just a gimmick to try and bring back the worship of the flag which right wing parties and football hooligans have brought into disrepute.

The aim appears to try and coalesce us into the unsavoury side of nationalism as distinct from patriotism. It was the nationalism in its more extreme form which was responsible for two world wars in the last century.
