Background information about the global trade in Israeli blood diamonds at : - http://electronicintifada.net/content/israels-blood-diamonds/8754; http://electronicintifada.net/content/diamond-industrys-double-standard-israel/10102; http://www.opednews.com/articles/Israel-s-greatest-fear--i-by-Se-n-Clinton-121027-116.html; http://rabble.ca/news/2012/05/israels-blood-diamonds-why-free-pass-regulators-and-civil-society; http://english.al-akhbar.com/node/7412

A 2009 Israeli study put the cost of “defence” expenditure (excluding NRC Dimona and the reserves forces) in 2008 at 88.9 billion NIS ($24.4 billion), constituting 12.3% of GDP. The $3 billion in direct military aid that Israeli gets from the US each year is not nearly enough to sustain the Zionist regime's subjugation of Palestine.
In 2008 the NET value of Israel's diamonds exports was $9.7 billion. Yahir Sahar, the new president of the Israeli Diamond Exchange, recently confirmed the importance of the diamond industry, describing it as “one of the cornerstones of the Israeli economy” with “an annual turnover of $25 billion”. Diamonds account for 30% of Israel's exports, and generate over $1 billion in funding for the Israeli military each year. Israel's diamond exports increased by 40% up to the end of August 2011 and are expected to surpass the €20 billion record achieved in 2008 when Israel was the world's leading diamond exporter.
As Israel is one of the world's biggest suppliers of cut and polished diamonds, jewellers worldwide are selling diamonds from Israel that fund war crimes and crimes against humanity in Palestine. Forty percent of the diamonds sold in America are crafted in Israel. To cover up this trade in blood diamonds the industry has conspired to con the public into believing the only diamonds that fund gross human rights violations are “rough diamonds used by rebel movements or their allies to finance conflict aimed at undermining legitimate governments”. Consumers are told that all other diamonds, including diamonds from Israel, are guaranteed by a “system of warranties” to be conflict free. This is completely false and grossly misleading.
The bullets and bombs that kill, maim and terrorise Palestinian children, adults and the elderly are funded by the trade in Israeli diamonds sold in most, if not all, of the most prestigious and fashionable jewellery outlets worldwide. Despite this, Jewellers are not asked to take responsibility for their role in financing state terrorism and are never the focus of public attention when Israel evicts a Palestinian family from their home, or uproots their olives trees or attacks the fishermen off the coast of Gaza, nor when Israeli soldiers come in the middle of the night to terrorise Palestinian families in the homes or any of the other far more serious crimes perpetrated by the Israeli state against Palestinians on a daily basis. Jewellers get off scott-free.
In the marble halls of the world’s most famous jewellery outlets Israeli blood diamonds are bathed in dazzling white light for the rich and comfortable to satisfy their lust for the trinkets that are the status symbols of the wealthy. Their exchange of real money for pieces of polished carbon is comforted by the belief that theirs is an ethical purchase, helping to fund worthy causes in some of the poorest countries. Their minds eye is steered well clear of the images of blood-drenched hospital floors in Gaza and smoking trails of white phosphorous streaking the skies in the ghetto. Their diamonds are after all conflict free, as any jeweler will tell you.
