During 1982-1999, the Department of Geology and Mining was established at Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) under the support of former Soviet Union (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), but in 1999, the department was downgraded due to the limits of job market. In response to the emerging need on the management and development of natural resources in Cambodia and under the recommendations of the Royal Government of Cambodia to reopen the school of Geology, ITC plans to establish a new department, namely "Geo-resources and Geotechnical Engineering, in term of sustainable human resources development in Geo-resources Engineering. Through this initiative, ITC has drafted a strategic plan for creating this new program by consulting with its board of consortium as well as the endorsement by Board Council of Administration for final approval to establish the department at the end of 2011.

This department aims to develop human resources in the the field of Mining, Geology, Petroleum and Geotechnical Engineering.
