OCTOBER IS JUVENILE JUSTICE AWARENESS/ACTION MONTH.
Today is #LGBTQ Youth Day, a day to get informed on how the practice of trying youth as adults disproportionally impacts LGBTQ youth! Stay tuned as we’ll throughout the day share data, facts and content to show on LGBTQ youth in the justice system.
Did you know? Although LGBT youth make up 7-9% of the general population, they constitute over 20% of youth in detention, 85% of which are youth of color. 39% of girls in the juvenile system also identify as LGBT or gender non-conforming.
When behind bars, LGBT Youth face higher risks of physical and sexual abuse than their cisgender/heterosexual peers. 36% of gay and bisexual boys in detention report physical and sexual assault by peers and staff.
