#CAIR-NY Welcomes Salman Hamdani Way Street Naming Ceremony
(NEW YORK, NY, 4/28/14) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today welcomed a street naming ceremony for Salman Hamdani Way on 204st street in Bayside, Queens in honor of Mohammad Salman Hamdani, the 23-year-old certified EMT and NYPD cadet who lost his life as a result of the 9/11 terror attacks.

CAIR-NY Board President Ryan Mahoney said:
"Today, CAIR-NY commends the city council for honoring a true American hero, Salman Hamdani, who gave his life as a first responder on 9/11. This street naming will serve as a reminder of courage and sacrifice to the residents and visitors of Bayside for years to come as well as a testament that individuals and communities of all ethnic and religious backgrounds are united in the cause of service to humanity.”
In 2012, Hamdani was not included in the list of fallen police officers in the NYPD’s official 9/11 memorial and in the list of 441 first responders on the National September 11 Memorial. However, Hamdani received full police honors at his 2002 funeral, at which Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly were present. His mother, Talat Hamdani received a police shield in honor of her son.

The fundraising came as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the neo-Nazi vandalism. CAIR is the nation’s largest Muslim Civil Rights and advocacy organization.
“This disgusting act of hate must be repudiated by local, state and national leaders across the political spectrum,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Only a depraved mind would consider targeting a memorial to one of the victims of Nazi hatred and violence.”
