The Bureau of Justice Statistics was established on December 27, 1979, under the Justice Systems Improvement Act of 1979 (Pub. L. 96-157). We provide objective and independent criminal justice statistics in support of national, state, tribal, and local justice policies and decision-making.
BJS has three main responsibilities: 1) building and maintaining statistical data collections that span the sequence of events in the criminal justice system; 2) providing statistics that respond to criminal justice programs and policy information needs; and 3) providing state, tribal, and local governments with technical and financial support to expand or enhance criminal justice programs.
