The not so pleasant side of paint protection film.
PPF offers stone chip protection, but it is an imperfect product and we advise customers to use as little as they are comfortable with. Covering impact areas and coating the remainder of the vehicle with a ceramic coating seems to give customers the best overall results.
Unfortunately, we see some bad film work out there. One of our competitors who's film we have replaced a few times, likes to glue their film to the car. PPF has its own adhesive, but for time and ease of installation they use an additional adhesive (or adhesive accelerant) around all of the edges. This practice makes the film very difficult to remove when it needs to be replaced. More importantly, we have seen that their practice damages the underlying paint when used on plastic surfaces such as bumpers.
Below you can see how the paint was destroyed on the bumper of our recent BMW Z4 M Coupe project. We also experienced similar damage on a Tesla that we worked on last year. I saw similar damage on a BMW 5 Series just last week. You can also see how badly yellowed the PPF was on the M Coupe. The customer informed the shop of the yellowing just months after it was originally installed. They did nothing!
Please research a "detailing" shop before you bring them your vehicle to have it "protected"! All that you might be doing is preventing stone chips between resprays!
