This week, Amarillo Fire Department has partnered with American Red Cross to help facilitate a Smoke Alarm install event in the San Jacinto neighborhood of Amarillo. The event is a project by Adrian Avilia, a freshman at Randall High School, who is a Boy Scout. This event is a community service project in Adrian’s pursuit of his Eagle Scout badge.
Amarillo Fire Department and the local chapter of the American Red Cross will be providing Adrian with up to 300 smoke alarms to install on Saturday, October 26th. The event will base out of the parking lot at San Jacinto Elementary School, 3400 W. 4th Avenue, beginning at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m. a team of volunteers, coordinated by Adrian, will canvas the San Jacinto neighborhood, installing Smoke Alarms in homes.
The goal of the event is to install 150 - 300 Smoke Alarms by 3 p.m.
Notifications are being sent, this week, with students in the San Jacinto neighborhood schools, of the event. Parents will be able to follow the instructions on the handout to register for a Smoke Alarm to be installed in their home. Additionally, any residents in the San Jacinto neighborhood, who wish to have a Smoke Alarm installed in their home, may contact the American Red Cross, 806.376.6300.
This event is a noble effort by Adrian to serve our community and to make homes safer. Smoke Alarms are an important tool in saving lives in the event of a fire - providing residents with notification of the presence of smoke so that they can successfully exit the home. Smoke Alarms greatly improve survivability rates during a fire in a home.
Congratulations to Capt. LaGrone aka "Chop" on his retirement! He spent over 32 years serving the city of Amarillo. Good luck on the next chapter!

Meet Kim. She works in our administration office and loves to knit in her spare time. Over the course of the last several months she has been making these blankets for homeless vets in our area. She’s been bringing them to work and stacking them up in anticipation of this day. Yesterday she teamed up with Homeless Heroes to get them distributed for Veteran’s Day. Today they are handing them out along with care bags.
We are proud to have such a selfless person on our AFD team. Way to go Kim!
God bless all our Veterans and thank you for your service!!!!
