MILDURA ABATTOIR REOPENS
MeatCo Australia has spent two million dollars upgrading the Mildura abattoir.
Processing resumed at the site on Tuesday.
It's been more than a decade since the abattoir was last used.
The controversial project was approved by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal despite a campaign by neighbours to stop the plant reopening.
The company is planning to process 6,000 sheep, lambs and goats per week.
These carcases will be exported to markets in Asia and Europe and could generate up to 32 million dollars per year.
The reopening of the abattoir is expected to create 80 jobs.
However the Mildura Rural City Council has confirmed its planning staff are investigating whether the abattoir is operating in accordance with planning permit conditions.
They talk a big talk when it comes to local jobs and investment in our local economy, yet "planning staff are investigating whether the abattoir is operating in accordance with planning permit conditions" ???
Why?
We are talking about a facility that has been around a long time, long enough that anyone who has purchased a property in the direct vicinity within the last 81 years, would have KNOWN of its existence, and they still chose to buy there.
We should be supporting companies coming to invest in the future of the Sunraysia region, not putting up road blocks and driving them away.
