בגיל צעיר נאלץ לוותר מינגוס על הצ'לו לטובת קונטרבס, כיוון שלא יכל להתקבל לתזמורת קלאסית בשל צבע עורו. מאוחר יותר הוא התגלה כבסיסט וירטואוז ומלחין חדשני שידע לשלב בין ג׳אז לסגנונות מוזיקה רבים ושונים. בשנות ה-40 וה-50 הוא ניגן עם גדולי הג׳אז, ביניהם לואי ארמסטרונג, צ׳ארלי פרקר, מיילס דייויס ודיוק אלינגטון. עד למותו ב-1979 הקליט למעלה מ-30 אלבומים והפך לאחת הדמויות המשפיעות ביותר במוזיקה האמריקאית.

At a young age Charles Mingus had to give up the cello for the bass because no classical orchestra would admit him due to the color of his skin. He became a virtuoso on bass and an innovative composer who combined jazz with many diverse musical styles. In the 1940s and 1950s, he played alongside many other jazz greats -- Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and more. By the time of his death in 1979, he had recorded more than 30 albums and had become one of the most important figures in American music.
