Message from the Director of the ACLU of Puerto Rico.
It is amazing that we have not learned the lessons of the HIV epidemic.
Publicly marking people for isolation at road blocks to towns will not end well. Blocking people who appear to have symptoms, and may not be positive; while allowing others to enter the town makes no sense.
We already know that many infected with the Coronavirus show no symptoms. They will be allowed into town; they are also learning that informing that he/she tested positive may not be convenient.
We are forcing people who are asymptotic positive for COVID to go underground. We need to assure people that they will not be stigmatized. Lets not go back to twin epidemics - the virus epidemic and the epidemic of discrimination.
No one should be forced into the closet, if we want to beat this new disease.
If you feel that your freedom is in play or being taken away from you, you should learn more about North Korea. This virus is a silent killer, we cannot see it, nor recognize specific symptoms. I work along side with CDC specialists and what we face today is no joke.
For the love of God, be considerate and instead of defying specific measures for the safety and well being of those who are vulnerable. Be advice, today is for those, maybe tomorrow is for you. Patience and preservation is what we need. Be safe and God bless us all!
